Shangri-La is one of the cities under the jurisdiction of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, where Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet provinces meet, and also the hinterland of the "Three Parallel Rivers" scenic spot. Shangri-La, formerly known as Zhongdian County, is called "Jiantang" in Tibetan. According to legend, it is the fief of the third son of the Tibetan king, Batang and Litang. "Dian" seems to be Yi language, meaning "Bazi" and "Pingdu". Zhongdian is a Naxi language, which is a transliteration of "land", meaning "the residence of the chief" or "the place where yaks are raised". Shangri-La is the Tibetan language of Diqing, which means "the sun and moon in my heart". 1933, in his novel The Lost Horizon, james hilton first described Shangri-La, an eternal and quiet place far from the eastern mountains.
