What kind of city is Kiev?

Kiev (KYIV), the capital of Ukraine, is located on both sides of the Dnieper River, with a population of 2,635,000 (January 1, 2001). It is the largest city and political, economic, cultural and scientific center in the country. It has a temperate continental climate, with an average temperature of -5.8℃ in January and 19.5℃ in July. In the former Soviet Union, it ranked third after Moscow and St. Petersburg.
