Introduction to Wuhan
Wuhan, referred to as "Han", also known as Jiangcheng, is the capital, sub-provincial city and megacity of Hubei Province. Wuhan is located in the center of China's hinterland, In the eastern part of Hubei Province, at the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Han River. The geographical location is 113°41′~115°05′ east longitude and 29°58′~31°22′ north latitude. The easternmost part of Wuhan is Jiangjunshan Village, Xugu Street, Xinzhou District, the westernmost part is Guoguang Village, Zhurushan Street, Caidian District, the southernmost part is Junbao Village, Husi Street, Jiangxia District, and the northernmost part is Lichong Village, Caidian Street, Huangpi District.
As of the end of 2021, the city has 13 districts under its jurisdiction, with a total area of ??8569.15 square kilometers and a permanent population of 13.6489 million.
Historical evolution
In 1950, Wuhan City was under the leadership of the Central and South Military and Political Commission, which was located in Hankou. In 1952, Wuhan City was led by the Central and South Administrative Committee and was its headquarters. In 1954, Wuhan City was changed to the capital city of Hubei Province. In 1959, Xiaogan, Tongcheng, Yingshan, Puqi, Dawu (in Erlangdian), Jiayu, Huangpi, Hanyang (in Caidian Town), Wuchang, Hanchuan, Xianning, Yingcheng, Tongshan, Sixteen counties including Yunmeng, Chongyang, and Anlu were placed under the leadership of Wuhan City.
In 1960, Tongcheng County was abolished and merged into Chongyang County; Jiayu County was abolished and merged into Wuchang County; Puqi County was abolished and merged into Xianning County; Yunmeng County was abolished and merged into Anlu county. It governs 12 counties. In 1961, 12 counties including Xiaogan, Yingshan, Dawu, Huangpi, Hanyang, Wuchang, Hanchuan, Xianning, Yingcheng, Tongshan, Chongyang and Anlu were placed under the Xiaogan Prefecture.
In 1979, Wuchang County (Zhuzhifang Town), which originally belonged to the Xianning area, and Hanyang County (Zhucaidian Town), which originally belonged to the Xiaogan area, were placed under the leadership of Wuhan City.
On August 19, 1983, the State Council approved the transfer of Huangpi County in Xiaogan Prefecture and Xinzhou County in Huanggang Prefecture to Wuhan City.
In 1984, Hannan District of Wuhan City was established; in May of the same year, Wuhan was approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council as a pilot city for comprehensive reform of the economic system and a city with separate state planning.
In July 1992, Wuhan City was approved by the State Council as a city open to the outside world; on September 12 of the same year, the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved the abolition of Hanyang County and the establishment of Caidian District of Wuhan City, with the District People's Government located in Caidian Town.
In 1993, Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved by the State Council as a national-level development zone.
On March 28, 1995, the State Council approved the abolition of Wuchang County and the establishment of Jiangxia District of Wuhan City, with the district people's government stationed in Zhifang Town.
On September 15, 1998, the State Council approved the abolition of Huangpi County and Xinzhou County and the establishment of Huangpi District and Xinzhou District in Wuhan City. At this point, Wuhan City has jurisdiction over 13 administrative districts. ?
In December 2007, with the consent of the State Council, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the Wuhan City Circle as a national comprehensive supporting reform pilot zone for the construction of a resource-saving and environment-friendly society.
In January 2010, the State Council approved East Lake High-tech Zone as China’s second national independent innovation demonstration zone after Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park.
In November 2010, the State Council approved the upgrade of Wuhan Wujiashan Economic and Technological Development Zone to a national economic and technological development zone (renamed Wuhan Airport Economic and Technological Development Zone in March 2013).
In 2015, Wuhan was positioned by the state as a national innovative city pilot and comprehensive innovation and reform pilot zone; in July of the same year, Wuhan City Circle became the first domestic science and technology financial reform and innovation pilot zone.
In March 2016, the "Yangtze River Economic Belt Development Plan Outline" listed Wuhan as a megacity.
On December 14, 2016, the National Development and Reform Commission formally responded to the letter requesting Wuhan to accelerate the establishment of a national central city and build an internationally renowned, beautiful and livable city.
