Shopping in Mauritius

Port Louis, GrandBaie and Curepipe are the main shopping areas in Mauritius. There are three main items worth buying: ADAMAS diamonds (diamonds of the same quality are cheaper than those in South Africa), healthy sugar that does not gain weight, and textiles with high quality and low price. Other items include exquisite T-shirts, rattan, hand-made model boats, export sweaters, tea, shell carvings, spices and so on.

When you come to Mauritius, don't miss the Oriental Market in Port Louis, the capital. There are many things here, which are cheap and have local characteristics. Straw baskets are a major feature of the market, and their prices range from five to twenty Singapore dollars. Mauritius also has many brand-name clothes, such as PoloRalphLauren's FactoryOutlet. Everything sold here is genuine, but the price is cheaper than that of ordinary stores. If the cash is not enough, you can sign a card. There is also a very special booth in the market, which specializes in selling all kinds of herbs. It is understood that some Mauritians prefer natural herbs to western medicine.

Friends who want to shop can go to the central market in downtown Port Louis. Mauritius has exquisite handicrafts, especially wooden sailboats, which are exquisite in workmanship and are the best home furnishings. In addition, local leather products such as cowhide bags, leather shoes and belts all have African characteristics. Interested tourists may wish to buy local wave checkers, which is very cheap.

In addition to the capital Port Louis, there are many shopping towns along the road in Mauritius, where you can buy local rattan, handmade model boats, export sweaters, tea, shell carvings, spices and so on.

Shopping hours in major cities are from 9: 30 am to 7: 00 pm (Monday to Saturday). Some shops are open until noon on Sundays and public holidays. Duty-free shops in airports and modern shopping centers (Caudan, Gulpip, Floréal Plaza, Happy World Building, Orchard Center) offer various products.

Please note: there are no shops in Rose Hill, Curepipe and Quatre-Bornes are open on Thursday afternoon.

Mauritius specialty

diamond

Mauritius is also a diamond producer. Although not as famous as South Africa, everything in the shop is beautifully made. One thing to note is that because it is a duty-free shop, you can't take away the things you bought in the store yourself. But don't worry, the service staff in the store will send it to the airport after registering personal passports, flights and other information. After passing the security check at the airport, you can easily get the items you bought by showing the relevant documents.

Dodo souvenir

In almost all places in Mauritius where handicrafts and tourist souvenirs are sold, you can see an animal souvenir like a big fat duck, which is made of straw, carved with wood and printed on postcards and T-shirts. It is a dodo, a specialty of Mauritius, and also a dodo in Alice in Wonderland. That's it!

Dodo is the national bird of Mauritius. Don't forget to buy some souvenirs of the dodo to take home!

Handmade wooden sailboat

Mauritius has exquisite handicrafts, especially wooden sailboats, which are exquisite in workmanship and are the best home furnishings.

Eat sucrose that is not fat

The main industry in Mauritius is the export of sucrose.

Sugarcane fields account for more than 2/3 of the country's cultivated land, and 30% of the labor force is engaged in sugarcane planting and sucrose production. There are even two thick sugarcane patterns on the national emblem, which shows the status of sugarcane in the minds of Mauritians. There are 19 sugar factories in China with an annual output of 600,000-700,000 tons, and the per capita sugar output is the same as that of Cuba.
