Ailaoshan is named after the ancient Ailaoshan tribe that thrived here.

It belongs to Yunling remnant vein, the watershed between Yuanjiang River and Amo River, and the boundary between East Yunnan Plateau and Hengduan Mountains. It starts from Chuxiong City in the north between east longitude 100 16' and north latitude 103 16', and between 22 29' and 25 30' north latitude.

Ailao Mountain is huge and majestic, with an altitude of more than 2,000 meters. There are more than 20 peaks over 3000 meters, and the main peak of the same name is 3 165.9 meters above sea level. Ancient metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic sandstone shale are mainly exposed, which are large mountains with uplifted crust and deep rivers since Himalayan orogeny. The climate has obvious vertical distribution. From the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain, it presents the characteristics of tropical climate in South Asia, tropical climate in Central Asia, tropical climate in North Asia, warm temperate climate and temperate climate, and the vegetation also has obvious vertical distribution characteristics.

Ailaoshan is a fault-block mountain that rises strongly along the deep fault zone of the Red River. The bedrock in the mountain core is mainly Proterozoic deep metamorphic rocks, gneiss and migmatite, and Yanshanian ultrabasic rocks and acid granite are infiltrated. Paleozoic and Mesozoic sandstone and shale are exposed in the middle and lower parts, mainly paleometamorphic rocks and Mesozoic sandstone shale. Since Himalayan orogeny, it has been a mountain with deep crustal uplift, river cutting and cutting.

The main function of Ailao Mountain in climate is that the weak cold air is blocked by the mountain in winter, and the strong cold air becomes a spent force when it crosses the mountain. When the southwest warm and humid airflow flows eastward, it is blocked by the mountain, resulting in more precipitation in the west and south of Ailao Mountain than in the east, higher temperature in the same latitude and altitude than in the east, and less cold current invasion in winter.
