Fenghuang belongs to the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province. It is located on the western edge of Hunan Province and the southwest corner of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It borders Luxi County in the east, Mayang County in the south, and Mayang County in the west. It borders Tongren City and Songtao Miao Autonomous County in Guizhou Province, and borders Jishou City and Huayuan County in the north.

It is said in history that "it controls Yunnan and Guizhou in the west, Chenyuan in the east, Sichuan and Hubei in the north, and Guangxi in the south." Fenghuang Ancient City has a long history. The Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings are well preserved in Fenghuang Ancient City. There are 85 cultural relics protection units at or above the county level, including 2 at the national level and 8 at the provincial level.

The county has 116 ancient ruins, more than 120 characteristic residential buildings, and more than 10,000 precious cultural relics and various rare fossils. It is one of the counties and cities in southwest China with the most existing cultural relics and historic sites. As of the end of 2020, the entire territory is 66 kilometers long from north to south and 50 kilometers wide from east to west, with a total land area of ??1,759.1 square kilometers.
