Why does Tibetan Buddhism think Gangdise Mountain is a sacred mountain?

The Gangdise Mountain is also called "Kaylas", which means "Snow Mountain". Since ancient times, it has been a sacred place for people to worship, pilgrimage and travel in Central Asia and Southeast Asia. There is a temple in India called "Shiva Temple", which is called "Kailata" in Indian, and its building structure is similar to this mountain. The Book of the Past also holds that the country ruled by the Hindu god of wealth Yan Po-Luo is on this mountain, and several peaks around the mountain are the treasure house of the god of wealth. Jainism also regards Gangdise Mountain as a sacred mountain with spirituality, and it is the place where the founder of Jainism, Le Xiabaha, is free.

Buddhism has various descriptions of this mountain. According to tantra, it symbolizes the victory of the mother of God and Buddha, and the mother of King Kong and Buddha. Other Buddhists believe that the Buddha lived on this mountain, surrounded by 500 arhats. Bonism believes that this mountain is the king of all mountains, the residence of the gods, and the ladder for the gods to descend to earth. A Bonism god lives on this mountain. This shows the lofty position of Gangdise Mountain in Tibetan religion. Gangrinboqi, the main peak, is a famous Buddhist shrine.

Cultural experts in Gangdise Mountain believe that the dawn of Tibetan civilization was born in the micro-Molongren area in the middle of Xiangxiong. According to ancient literature, there are elephants in the west and Amdo in the east, while Weimolong people are located in Guge, at the foot of Gangdise Mountain and by the lake Mabangyongcuo. Therefore, Gangdise Mountain and Mabangyongcuo are the cradles of Bonism, the pioneer of Tibetan civilization. In fact, Wei Molong people have long been famous as the birthplace of Rao Miwo, the founder of Boni.

Bonism originated in the Gangdise region and has long been worshipped. The towering Gangdise Mountain and its surrounding lakes, rivers and other nature have created the Boni religion, which advocates nature. The ancient Tibetans were shocked by this huge thing between heaven and earth and respected it, and then worshipped it and respected it as the sacred mountain of Xiangxiong Kingdom.

Bonism also believes that the sky is like an umbrella and the earth is like a lotus, and the Gangdise Mountain is the handle of the umbrella and the rhizome of the lotus. It is in the center of the world, the residence of the gods and the ladder connecting heaven and earth; The founder Rao Miwo and his incarnation descended the stairs, and this mountain is home to 360 gods of the Sect.

Mount Gangdise is not only the birthplace of Buddhism, but also the birthplace of Hinduism. Some scholars further speculate that many religions in Southeast Asia, such as Bonism, Hinduism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, etc., are of the same origin, and all originated in Gangdise Mountain at the earliest.

In the name of Gangdise, "Gang" is Tibetan, which means "snow", and "Diese" is Sanskrit, which means "snow mountain". The two languages are combined to get this name. There is a saying in "Records of the Andes Lake": Gangdise Mountain is the king of a mountain, which is unattainable and towering into the sky, with many snow peaks in the mountain and freezing cold. Ice crystals, ice bamboo shoots and ice mushrooms can often be seen on the mountain. The cave is like the Crystal Palace, with many ice bridges between the peaks. The Gangdise Mountain is a world of ice and snow, except for boulders and rocks. B?rge Ring, the main peak, is like a king's dragon bed, and all the surrounding peaks are his subjects. The legend of Wanbao in the east is that Buddha Sakyamuni climbed this mountain, with Tara Mountain in the west, Wisdom Nvshen Peak in the south and Dharma Mountain in the north ... According to tantric accounts, Gangdise Mountain is a sacred place to win supreme honor. Therefore, the Buddhist Kagyu Sect, which advocates victory and joy, has always regarded the Snow Mountain as a place of practice, and there are still many well-preserved practice caves in Shenshan. According to the famous Buddhist sect, Gangdise is the holy land of the Sixteen Arhats. It is said that when Adixia, a Bangladeshi monk, went to Tibet to preach, he vaguely heard the sound of knocking on sandalwood boards on the mountain. He thought it was Luohan who had lunch at noon, so he said to everyone, "Luohan is knocking at noon. Let's have lunch." Legend has it that from then on, all pilgrims who come to the Gangdise Mountain can hear the sound of sandalwood knocking if they are blessed.

Gangdise is a culture. Human beings have given her the highest hope in her heart, pinning reincarnation and happiness leading to heaven on her. She has become a touchstone in human hearts, giving light to countless believers and all ordinary lives, and people worship her. Pilgrimage to Gangdise is the lifelong wish of Indian Buddhists, Hindus, Christians or Jains. For Tibetans from Lhasa, Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan, as well as believers from India, Nepal, Bhutan or Pakistan, pilgrimage to Gangdise is extremely sacred and full of hardships. It is hard for ordinary people to imagine that they have walked for half a year or even a year, walking thousands of miles of clouds and months. Some of them want to cross the no-man's land, some want to cross the Himalayas, and some even fall on the way to worship. Those who can go home safely after the pilgrimage are respected everywhere. It is said that in India, Bhutan and Nepal, in the past, Christians and lamas went to Chaoshan, and they could take a carriage for free at home. Ali people who live near Ganrinpoche are lucky. When they own Gangdise, they have a supreme status and wealth. When they go to Nepal, India or Qingkang Tibetan areas, as long as they say that they are from Gangrinpoche, they will receive special courtesy.

Hindus believe that as long as you worship Mount Gangdise, there is no need to worship other mountains. A circle around Gangrinboqi (about sixty or seventy kilometers) can wash away the sins of a lifetime; After ten turns, you can avoid the suffering of hell in 500 cycles; After a hundred turns, you can ascend to heaven and become a Buddha. Every 12 years, the Mountain God Festival in the Year of the Horse continues to this day. It is believed that one pilgrimage to Gangdise in the Year of the Horse is equivalent to 13 times a year, because all the gods in the Year of the Horse, big or small, will gather here.
