China Tourism Day originated on May 19, 2001. Ma Shaoqin, a native of Ninghai, Zhejiang, issued an initiative to the society to establish a "China Tourism Day" in the name of Ninghai Xu Xiake Travel Club, and suggested "Xu Xiake's Travel Notes" The opening day of the first "Tiantai Mountain Travel Diary" (May 19) is designated as China Tourism Day.

The image promotion slogan of "China Tourism Day" is "Love Travel, Love Life". The slogan is simple, bright, loud and powerful, and easy to pronounce. It highly summarizes the theme concept of "China Tourism Day" and advocates more of Chinese people go out of their homes and participate extensively in tourism activities to improve their quality of life. The "China Tourism Day" logo is based on the application work of an art teacher in Changchun City, Jilin Province, and was modified and improved by professional organizations.

World Tourism Day is a holiday for tourism workers and tourists determined by the World Tourism Organization. On September 27, 1970, the International Federation of Official Tourism adopted the World Tourism Organization Charter at a special congress held in Mexico City. To commemorate this day, the Third Congress of the World Tourism Organization in September 1979 officially designated September 27 as World Tourism Day.
