Extended information:

Historical origins

Birthplace

December 31, 1847 On that day, a concert was being held on an open-air stage outside Vienna. A newspaper in Leipzig at the time described: "The conductor.

He is a man with curly hair and dark complexion. His lips are slightly upward, giving the impression of a genius. He raised the violin and followed the piano. With a shake of the head, bright and smooth music wafted out from a small but high-quality band."

This dark-skinned, "Moor-like" conductor is old John Shi. Strauss - founder of the brilliant Strauss family. At that time, he organized a band to tour throughout Europe and gained a great reputation.

The concert lasted until the New Year's bell rang in 1848. The band played a work by the famous Viennese composer Joseph Haydn (Josel Haydn) as a celebration of the New Year, and then the band played A song by John Georg Scherzer (this song later almost became a Viennese folk song) "Dance and sing, whether we are rich or poor..."

(Then the band began to play cheerfully Dance music: waltz, polka, Lendler... The concert turned into a grand dance, the entire venue was a dance floor, the audience danced to the music, and wonderful works were asked to perform encores, two, three or even more times... ...The joyful dance continued until dawn.

This concert a century and a half ago was the birthplace of the current Vienna New Year's Concert.
