How to save yourself when a boat capsizes while traveling at sea?
I am a sailor with more than ten years of sailing experience. I have also been through a lot of ups and downs. I have thought about this question many times, but God has also taken care of me many times. Although he was on the verge of danger many times, he was eventually saved. I won’t go into details here. This time, I will tell you three real cases that happened to me:
A friend’s boat capsized due to strong wind and waves. Fortunately, it overturned in the shallows not far from the shore. After it capsized, because everyone was prepared to abandon the ship in advance, there were very few casualties. Only the chief engineer was trapped in the engine room. Those who abandoned the ship first to escape, after the ship capsized, the ship did not sink because it was in a shoal, but the bottom of the ship was up and the cab was down. Due to the strong wind and waves, the sailors abandoned the ship and swam back to the bottom of the ship. Although the shore on land can be seen directly, due to the strong wind and waves, the sailors divided into two groups: one group advocated jumping directly into the sea and swimming to the shore. One group advocates staying put and waiting for rescue. In the end, all the people waiting for rescue were rescued, and all those who swam back to the shore were hit by the waves on the rocks. The ending was tragic. In both ways, after the chief engineer was trapped in the cabin, there was some bottom-up air in the cabin. First, he found a wrench and knocked on the hull in the dark, sending a signal to the outside world in an attempt to contact it. Everyone outside the ship could hear his signal, but no one could do anything. Later, due to rollover, the cabin refrigeration system leaked, resulting in hypoxia. The chief engineer almost died of hypoxia. Just as lives are at stake, the tide will recede. As the water level dropped, it leaked out of the portholes on the side of the ship. Finally, the porthole was broken and he was rescued by the sailors who stayed on the ship waiting for rescue.
Second, I am talking about a real case that also happened to me. The victim was my neighbor across the door. He rolled over because the captain was not doing it right. Unfortunately, they don't have a sea that doesn't ebb. Some surviving sailors climbed to the bottom of the ship and heard the SOS distress signal coming from the ship, but everyone was equally helpless. It's not that the survivors can't save people, but they can't save them at all! Imagine you are standing on a steel plate without any rescue tools. The people below are desperately calling for help, but you are helpless. Finally, the frequency of the distress signal becomes weaker and weaker until it disappears.
Third, I heard about this. One of our local wooden fishing boats rolled over and the crew members all fell asleep and survived. Except for one buddy who had a stomachache that day and had to go to the toilet in the middle of the night. Due to the poor condition of wooden boats and the lack of dedicated toilets, people usually squat on the deck and stick their butts out to solve the problem. In the end, this guy was rescued by a passing boat without any pants on.
Having said so much to everyone, it only means one thing: Don’t think too wildly about how to save yourself, just remember the words left by your ancestors in "My Brothers", if you can Go up the mountain, don't go into the sea!
