China’s latest city size classification is released! What do the four newly promoted county-level "big cities" have in common?

Recently, the National Bureau of Statistics released the "2020 National Economic and Social Development Statistical Bulletin". According to the communiqué, the size of my country's cities in 2020 reached 94.39 million, including 1 megacity, 9 large cities, and 8.42 million medium-sized cities; 4.27 million people were in county-level cities; 2.76 million of them were county-level cities. Ten thousand people, including 12 county-level cities with a permanent population of more than one million, and 28 county-level cities with a permanent population of more than 2 million.

From the perspective of city size, there are four new county-level cities in this selection: Rugao, Jiangsu, and Weihai, Shandong. They are Tianchang, Taizhou City, Jimo, Qingdao City, Haiyan, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, and Jiangxi Ningdu County, Ji'an City, Hunan Province (county-level city); and Wuling District, Changde City, Hunan Province, Hengnan County, Hengyang City, Hunan Province, Yiling District, Yichang City, Hubei Province, and Chaonan District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province (county-level cities). How did these county-level? big cities? achieve remarkable results and become unique megacities and county-level cities in China and even the world?

The planning concepts of the three cities of Rugao, Haiyan and Ningdu County are highly consistent with the new development requirements of my country's current new era and lead the high-quality development of cities. Rugao took the lead in proposing a new urbanization strategy during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, clearly proposing the concepts of "leading the countryside with the city, promoting the countryside with the city, integration of urban and rural areas, integration of industry and city, and human-city environment", and proposed the construction of landscape gardens. The city is a happy city that is suitable for living, working and traveling; and it has layouts in many fields such as the "Regulatory Detailed Planning of Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone" and the "Regulatory Detailed Planning of Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone".

When formulating the plan, Haiyan proposed that it would vigorously develop the tourism industry and the tertiary industry, and turn new urbanization into a green development driver. It has achieved great results. Ningdu County has clearly proposed to build a "one main, two auxiliary, three-axis, multi-node" (main city central area and subsidiary city) urban area development pattern; and take the construction of a livable and industrial happy city as a guide to optimize the spatial layout of the industrial economy and realize The harmonious combination of economic development and environmental protection.
