Zhoukou City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, is located in the southeast of Henan Province, in the hinterland of the Huanghuai Plain. It borders Fuyang City, Anhui Province to the east, Luohe City and Xuchang City to the west, and Zhumadian City to the south. It borders Kaifeng City and Shangqiu City in the north. In 1965, Zhoukou District (later changed to Zhoukou Area) was established. In 2000, with the approval of the State Council, Zhoukou Area was revoked and Zhoukou City was established.

Zhoukou is located in the mid-latitude zone, with a vague subtropical monsoon climate and a warm temperate monsoon climate. It has the length of the north and the south, has four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and a relatively large temperature difference in winter. The precipitation is relatively high in summer and autumn and less in winter. The annual average temperature in Zhoukou is between 14.5℃ and 15.8℃. The city's average frost period is 146 days and the frost-free period is 219 days.

Zhoukou belongs to the Huaihe River Basin and has four major fan-shaped water systems: Shaying River, Guohe River, Xifei River and Ruhe River. Among them, Shaying River is the largest tributary of Huaihe River. The Shahe River originates from Shiren Mountain in the west of Lushan County, Henan Province, and the Yinghe River originates from the Yanggan and Shaoshi Mountains in the Songshan Mountains. The two rivers converge in Sunzui Village, Chuanhui District, and are called the Shaying River.
