Friendly exchanges in Chiang Mai

Make friends with Qingdao

In June 2004, the third Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue initiated by Thailand was held in Qingdao, which created a good opportunity for the exchanges between Qingdao and Thailand.

In July 2005, Puni Charusson, then Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, visited Qingdao to attend the signing ceremony of the joint venture agreement of Tsingtao Brewery (Thailand) Marketing Co., Ltd., and proposed with Mayor Xia Geng the intention of establishing a sister city relationship between Qingdao and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

In February 2006, Qingdao sent a working group to Thailand, signed a memorandum with Chiang Mai to establish a sister city and strengthen cooperation in various fields, and discussed trade cooperation with Thailand's Ministry of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the two sides have exchanged visits many times and reached an understanding on sister cities and cooperation in various fields.

In April 2008, Mayor Xia Geng led a delegation to visit Thailand, signed a sister city agreement with Chiang Mai, and held talks with Vice Premier and Minister of Industry of Su Wei on further developing bilateral cooperation.

Make friends with Shanghai

1In June, 1998, Governor Bavi Sisuporn of Chiang Mai Province of Thailand led a delegation of Thailand-China Friendship Association to visit Shanghai, and proposed to Vice Mayor Feng to establish a sister city relationship between Chiang Mai and Shanghai. Shortly after returning to China, Bawei asked our Consulate General in Chiang Mai to help him promote the reconciliation process between Shanghai and Chiang Mai.

In July, 1998, the Consulate General called the relevant departments in Shanghai to convey Chiang Mai's desire to have a good relationship with Shanghai. The consulate considers Thailand a friendly neighbor. In order to further promote the development of friendly relations between the two countries, it is suggested that Shanghai give it positive consideration.

On February 12, 2000, the All-China Friendship Association approved the marriage between Shanghai and Chiang Mai.

On April 2, 2000, chiang mai and Shanghai Mayor Xu signed the Shanghai Sister City Agreement.

Make friends with Chongqing

In 2008, Chongqing and Thailand had frequent exchanges in the field of tourism. Thailand is one of the most important destination countries for international cooperation and exchange of education in Chongqing. Southwest University and Chongqing University set up Confucius Institute of Kong Jing University and Confucius University of Wudong in Thailand respectively. The friendly exchanges between Chongqing and Chiang Mai are in the initial stage, and there is a huge space for cooperation.
