Weihai, located in the northeast of Shandong, is a port city surrounded by the sea on three sides. As an open coastal city, it seems that there is a big gap between its economic and urban status and its neighboring coastal cities, such as Qingdao, Yantai and Lianyungang. Therefore, in people's impression, Weihai has never developed. In fact, there are special reasons for this.

1, with special geographical location and relatively underdeveloped traffic.

Although Weihai is located at the top of Shandong Peninsula, it is relatively remote and surrounded by the sea on three sides. Most of the external traffic here is mainly by sea. Although high-speed rail has been opened in recent years, there are few lines, and most of them have to bypass Yantai or Qingdao, which have more advantages than Weihai in tourism and investment. Therefore, its special geographical location makes traffic inconvenient, which is also a reason why it is difficult to develop.

2. Being located in tourism real estate, it lacks its own advantages and core competitiveness.

I believe that the lively scene of selling houses in Weihai to all parts of the country more than ten years ago is still fresh in everyone's memory. One of the most livable cities in China? Slogans have really attracted many people to invest. However, after the excitement, most of the houses were empty. Real estate developers are busy making quick money, and hot money is quickly withdrawn, so they miss the good opportunity of industrial upgrading and give up industrial development, leaving the economy without strong support. Tourism management and services are also slightly inadequate. Liu Gongdao, Chengshantou and Huancuilou, which we know, are obviously not as famous and popular as Dalian and Qingdao around us. If the beach has no characteristics, it has no advantage compared with other coastal cities.

3. In terms of foreign trade, the competition in the surrounding port cities is fierce.

Weihai, as a coastal city, close to Korea and Japan, has been committed to the development of China and South Korea? Bridge head? Foreign trade should be beneficial. But we can't ignore the fierce competition between port cities. In fact, the surrounding ports, Yantai Port in the north of the province, Qingdao Port in the south, Rizhao Port outside the province and Lianyungang are its strong competitors. The annual cargo throughput of these major ports is unmatched by Weihai Port. In such a fierce competition and the strong, Weihai Port did not show much advantage.

4. The military frontier position makes its military importance far higher than its economic importance.

The name of Weihai began in the Ming Dynasty and has a long history. Because of its strategic position, the Beiyang Navy of the Qing government was also established here. With the establishment of American military bases in Japan and South Korea after World War II, Weihai's military position has become more prominent. So its military importance is far higher than its economic importance. In the case of relatively rich port cities, no country will build its military frontier into the economic center of gravity. Facing Japan, South Korea and the Korean Peninsula, Weihai will be the first target to be attacked if there is a war. In recent years, affected by the situation in North Korea, Weihai's economy has been greatly affected by the Sadr incident. In addition, this strategic position also made Weihai miss Singapore's economic investment in the 1990s, and made Suzhou what it is now.

Although Weihai has always given us the impression that the economy has not developed by leaps and bounds, this does not affect our impression that it is a livable city with good air, beautiful environment and slow life.
