Erenhot City is located in the north-central part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The western part of Xilingol League is China's largest road and railway port open to Mongolia. At the end of 2016, the city's total population was 75,431, including 58,647 permanent residents (residing in this area for more than half a year) , including Erlian City’s registered population of 32,189. Among the registered population, there were 369 births and 71 deaths throughout the year, and the natural population growth rate was 4.42‰.

Historical evolution of Erenhot:

As early as primitive society, there were ancient hunting tribes. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it was Linhu Di, also known as Donghu. land.

The Xiongnu migrated here during the Qin and Han Dynasties. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Wuheng and Xianbei settled here. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the Turks migrated here. The Liao Dynasty was the land of Moge's lost tribe, and the Jin was the land of the Wanggu tribe.

The Yuan Dynasty belonged to Sunit Otok, the capital of Shangdu, and a Yulong stack was set up.

In the 14th year of Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty (1449), 30,000 households from the left wing of the Northern Yuan Dynasty were returned to the north and were called Sunit Otok.

The "Yilin" post station was set up in the 25th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1820). On April 3, 1956, the Xilingol League Administrative Office decided to establish Erlian Town, which was under the Sunit Right Banner.

On July 14, 1957, the People's Committee of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region decided to upgrade Erlian Town to the banner and county level. The word "hot" (meaning city in Mongolian) was added to "Erlian" and it belonged to the Xilingol League. .

In January 1966, Erenhot City was established with the approval of the State Council.

In November 1969, the Revolutionary Committee of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region decided that the city would be placed under the jurisdiction of the Ulanqab League.

In May 1980, it was reclassified back to the Xilingol League.

In January 1985, it was upgraded to a quasi-prefecture-level city with the approval of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and is a city under independent planning in the autonomous region. In June 1985, the State Council officially approved the city as a Category A open city.

In 1992, Erenhot was listed as one of the 13 border open cities by the State Council.

On June 5, 2014, the State Council agreed to establish a national key development and opening pilot zone in Erenhot City.
