Tunchang has Han, Mongolian, Hui, Tibetan, Miao, Yi, Zhuang, Buyi, Korean, Manchu, Dong, Yao, Bai, Tujia, Dai, Li, Lisu, She, Gaoshan, Shui, Tu, Mulao, Maonan and Lisu.
Tunchang county has not been established for a long time. Its predecessor, Xinmin County, was once the junction of Qiongshan, Ding 'an and Chengmai counties in history. The main tourist attractions in Tunchang are Mujie Lake Scenic Area, Jialetan Tourist Resort and Yushuling Ecological Park.
