The algae well at the top of the cave is a shallow carved lotus flower. Guyang Cave, located in the southern section of Longmen Mountain, was excavated in 493 A.D., which is the cave with the earliest excavation, the richest Buddhist content and the highest calligraphy art among the statues in Longmen Grottoes. It is magnificent in scale and momentum. The north wall of the cave is engraved with the words "Guyangdong" in regular script. During the Guangxu period in the late Qing Dynasty, Taoism rose in Longmen area. Seeing that there was no owner in Guyang Cave, the Taoist priest couldn't bear to waste it, so he changed the statue of Sakyamuni into a moral statue of the old gentleman on the throne. Because it is said that Laojun once practiced alchemy here, Guyang Cave is also called Laojun Cave.
There are hundreds of niches in Guyang Cave, and the carving and decoration are gorgeous, especially in the shape, lintel and forehead design, which are colorful and varied.
