Analysis of American Master of Tourism Management

Few universities in America have a pure master's degree in tourism management. At present, among the top 100 schools, only George Washington University and Michigan State University have tourism management majors. Many schools provide hotel/hotel management, catering management or event management. From the perspective of industry, tourism management includes the above three areas. In terms of professional application, these majors are also interlinked, so students are generally advised to apply for hotel management, catering or exhibition management in the United States at the same time as applying for tourism management.

This relationship can also be seen in the school curriculum. Take George Washington University as an example, its tourism management major has four directions: exhibition management, hotel management, sports management and sustainable development management of tourist destinations. The core courses in three different directions are the same: sustainable destination development, tourism research and statistical application in tourism/hotel management. Therefore, applicants can determine the direction they will choose according to their internship situation.

The application of tourism management is slightly less difficult than some popular business majors, and there is no hard and fast rule to indicate which majors can apply for tourism management and which can't. In terms of hard conditions, the requirements of tourism management application for GMAT or GRE/TOEFL and GPA are much lower than those of finance and accounting, but at the same time, tourism management application attaches great importance to the applicant's internship and even work experience in related fields, which can even make up for the applicant's GPA to a great extent. This can be seen from the school's professional training plan. American universities offer tourism management majors to train senior management talents in tourism enterprises, hotels and other fields. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that applicants applying for tourism management have relevant work and internship experience before applying.

The employment of tourism management is a problem that many candidates pay close attention to when consulting. Generally speaking, many students majoring in tourism management can learn a lot of courses such as hotels, exhibitions, restaurants and even scenic spot planning during their master's studies because of their interdisciplinary subjects, so the curriculum is very extensive. Graduates work in travel agencies, hotels, scenic spots and exhibition companies, but compared with financial accounting, the employment industry is limited.

Tourism is a booming industry in China, and there is still a big gap in the demand for senior tourism talents. Therefore, if the applicant has the ideal of devoting himself to the development of tourism, tourism management is a very good choice for the applicant.
