Mudu ancient town is located at the foot of Lingyan Mountain in the western suburbs of Suzhou. It is built on a mountain and lives by water. Its unique pattern is rare in many ancient towns in Jiangnan. Mudu is the only ancient garden town in the south of the Yangtze River. More than 30 private gardens in Ming and Qing Dynasties have been restored, including Yan Jia Garden, Yin Hong Shanfang, Gusong Garden, No.2 Mansion and Pan Yin Caotang. Its profound cultural accumulation, elegant garden environment and well-known historical legends provide a good place for modern urbanites to relax and cultivate their sentiments.

Mudu is an ancient water town of the same age as Suzhou, with a history of more than 2,500 years. According to legend, at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, Fu Cha, the king of Wu, built a pavilion at the top of Lingyan Mountain and added a Gusutai. "It takes three years to gather materials and five years to become useful." An endless stream of timber actually blocked the river port at the foot of the mountain, hence the name Mudu.

Mudu is surrounded by mountains and adjacent to Taihu Lake. There are real mountains and rivers, small bridges and flowing water, private gardens, celebrities' former residences and many other cultural relics and historic sites. Therefore, Mudu Scenic Area ranks first among Taihu Scenic Area 13 scenic spots. As the only ancient garden town in China, there are more than 30 private gardens in Mudu in Ming and Qing Dynasties, and more than 0 gardens/kloc-0 have been preserved so far.

Famous scenic spots include: Yan Jia Garden, Yin Hong Mountain Residence, Gusong Garden and No.2 Mansion, Lingyan Mountain and Tianping Mountain.
