Strasbourg siege
The siege of Strasbourg occurred in the Franco-Prussian War, which led to the abandonment of the fortress by the second French Empire on September 28th, 1870. After the Battle of Waite, Prince Frederick sent General Auguste von Weil to attack the fortress of Strasbourg. Strasbourg (and Metz) is considered to be one of the strongest fortresses in France.
Wilder's troops consisted of 40,000 soldiers from Wü rttemberg and Baden. These two places face Strasbourg across the Rhine River. 65,438+07,000 French troops were commanded by General Julius, 68. Wilder understood the importance of occupying cities and ruled out the possibility of long-term starvation and siege. Instead, it acted quickly, shelling fortifications and civilians to force them to surrender.
1On August 23rd, 870, Wilder's siege guns opened fire on the city, causing great losses and destroying many historical landmarks. The Archbishop of Strasbourg went to beg for a ceasefire in Wa Eerde, and the citizens suggested that if the shelling was stopped, he could pay 654.38 million francs to Wa Eerde every day. Julich laughed at women's soft nature, and Wilder realized that the shelling could not be sustained with all ammunition.
1870 On August 24th, following the municipal library in the former domenico church with Gothic style, the art museum was also destroyed by fire, and the unique collection of medieval manuscripts (including the most famous paradise collection, rare Renaissance books and Roman handicrafts) caught fire. Wilder continued to shell the city, this time targeting selected fortifications. The bunker instantly turned into a pile of rubble, and the German encirclement quickly moved closer to the city.
1870 September 1 1 day, a Swiss official delegation came to the city to evacuate non-combatants. The delegation also brought the news that France was defeated in the Battle of Sedan, which meant that no one would come to Strasbourg to clear the way. On September 1870 and 19, the rest of the citizens demanded surrender in Lishi, but they were rejected. Julich believes that a solid defense is still possible. But on the same day, Wilder bombed and occupied a fortification in the city. This incident made Leish begin to reconsider his city defense ability.
1On September 27th, 870, Lishi started negotiations with Wilder, and the city surrendered one day later. The capture of Strasbourg enabled Wilder to move further in southern France. His next move was to attack the city of Belfo, which was besieged in 165438+ 10.
