What is the status of Tuen Mun District in Hong Kong?

Tuen Mun is located in the western New Territories of Hong Kong, bordering Yuen Long District in the north, Tsuen Wan District in the east, the Pearl River Estuary in the west and Lantau Island across the sea in the south. The center of the area is Castle Peak (583m high) in the west, Jiujing Mountain (57m high) in the east, Yuantou Mountain and Yuen Long Plain in the north and Castle Peak Bay in the south. The central area of the area is sandwiched by two high mountains, Castle Peak and Kowloon Hill, while the Tuen Mun River flows into Castle Peak Bay from north to south.

As one of the 18 administrative regions in Hong Kong, Tuen Mun District is also one of the most populous residential areas in Hong Kong. Castle Peak Bay in the south of Tuen Mun District was reclaimed from the sea in the 197s and developed into a new town in Tuen Mun along with the surrounding coastal areas. Tuen Mun District includes the whole Tuen Mun New Town, as well as Lam Tei, Tai Lam Chung, Siu Lam, So Kwun Wat, Black Point and Black Point.

Before becoming a satellite city, Tuen Mun was a port street town linked with trade and fishery since ancient times. As far back as the Spring and Autumn Period (77 BC-475 BC), salt industry and fishery developed, and the central government stationed soldiers here to protect these industries, so the name of Tuen Mun also came from "the gateway where troops were stationed and guarded".

Extended information:

During the Tang Dynasty (618-97 AD) and the Song Dynasty (96-1279 AD), many Persians and Indians went to Guangzhou to do business with China, which became their residence, and Tuen Mun prospered. In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Portuguese used it as a base for invading China and landed here. At the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the British used it as a transit station for opium trafficking to China. Later, Tuen Mun did not continue as a trading port, because it was not "ceded" land, but "leased" land.

Because it is a new residential area, there are places like Qingsongguan, Qingshan Temple and Miu Fat Monastery in the suburbs. As of September 219, Tuen Mun covers an area of about 8,2 hectares with a population of 489,3, of which about 7% live in public housing. The ancient and modern features of the area are preserved, and many characteristic villages, natural zones and historic buildings, such as the Red Mansion and Qingshan Temple, are still preserved. At the same time, there is also the Hong Kong Gold Coast with European colors.
