The origin of Liuchi Lane
There is such a story circulating in history, which originated from a dispute between the Zhang family and their neighbors.
During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Ying served as a scholar of Wenhua Palace and the Minister of Rites. This position was equivalent to the prime minister in the Tang and Song Dynasties. The official position was high and the position was extremely popular. In addition, his son Zhang Tingyu also passed the Jinshi examination and became an official in the court. At that time, the Zhang family was very prominent in Tongcheng, Anhui. Both father and son are officials in the capital, and everything in their hometown is left to the old housekeeper to take care of.
One day, Zhang Ying's family wanted to build a house, and the land was close to their neighbor Ye's family. The Ye family had a scholar at that time, and it was considered a good family, but compared with the Zhang family, it was still a world of difference. At this time, the Ye family asked the Zhang family to leave a road for easy access.
But the housekeeper of the Zhang family disagreed, because the land deed of his family clearly stated, "The surname is Qiang Ye". In other words, if there is a way left, the Zhang family will suffer. Even if they want to leave a way, each family has to step back a few feet.
As the saying goes: "The prime minister's family has seven grades of officials." The old housekeeper felt that he was the dignified general manager of the prime minister's family, and building the wall in this way was justified. The opinions of a poor scholar in the Ye family were not worth heeding.
So the old housekeeper ordered the workers to build a new wall along the root of the Ye family wall. This Ye Xiucai had a stubborn temper. When he saw that the Zhang family had built a wall, he couldn't swallow his anger. The scholar was able to write on his own, and a petition was sent to the county government and a lawsuit was started.
At this time, someone advised Xiucai that the Zhang family’s background was relevant, and besides, they were well-founded, so it was best to give up. But the stubborn scholar refused to listen and threatened to continue the lawsuit. When the old housekeeper saw something was wrong, he quickly wrote a letter to Zhang Ying.
Soon, the old housekeeper received a reply from the master. There is not much to say in the letter, only four lines of poetry:
“It’s just a wall to build books for thousands of miles, so why not let him be three feet tall. The Great Wall is still there today, but Qin Shihuang is nowhere to be seen.”
The housekeeper read this poem and understood what the master meant. So he came to Ye's house and told Xiucai that the Zhang family's wall would be demolished tomorrow and they would step back three feet to make way. Ye Xiucai thought he was teasing him and didn't believe it was the truth at all.
At this time, the housekeeper showed Zhang Ying's poem to the scholar. The scholar was also a man of culture. After reading it, he felt ashamed and said with great emotion: "Prime Minister is very fond of holding a boat, Prime Minister Zhang." It’s so generous.”
The next morning, the Zhang family began to demolish the wall and retreated three feet. Ye Xiucai was so excited when he saw this that he also tore down the wall of his house and stepped back three feet. As a result, an alley 100 meters long and six feet wide was formed between the Zhang and Ye families, which was called "Six Feet Alley".
