It has produced outstanding figures in civil and military affairs such as Zhang Yi, Sima Qian, Xue Rengui, Wang Bo, Wang Zhihuan, Wang Wei, Liu Zongyuan, and Sima Guang.
Yuncheng has more than 1,600 cultural relics tourist attractions, of which 90 are protected by China and 57 are protected by the province. It is the prefecture-level city with the largest number of key cultural relics protection units in the country. The discovery of the fossils of Eurypithecus aegis has pushed the origin of humankind forward by more than 10 million years. The Xihoudu Cultural Site is the earliest evidence of human use of fire. Yuncheng is home to the Jiezhou Guandi Temple, the ancestor of the martial arts temple, the Guanhou Tu Temple, the ancestral temple of Taoism, the Yongle Palace, the ancestral palace of Taoism, the Yuncheng Salt Lake, the largest lake in Shanxi, and the Wulaofeng, the holy place for the spread of Heluo culture.
In the 1980s, Yuncheng people used to call Dongfeng Department Store the "Laobaida". Laobaida opened in 1960 and was once a landmark building in Yuncheng's commercial center.
