The Historical Background of Lake Mooncherry

Mooncherry Lake Scenic Area is located in Mooncherry Town, Shimen County, Hunan Province. It was named after Huang Tingjian, a poet and calligrapher of the Northern Song Dynasty, wrote Mooncherry in A.D. 1094. Mooncherry Lake was built in 1974 with a total area of 44 square kilometers. The islands in the lake are dotted with tens of thousands of cranes, egrets, cormorants and wild ducks. Surrounded by mountains in the lake, thousands of trees win glory and a hundred flowers blossom, enjoying the reputation of Huashan Bird Island.

Mooncherry Lake is located at the easternmost end of Wuling Mountain Range, which extends to Dongting Lake Plain. It has always been a battleground for military strategists. In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, Li Baicheng fled into Mengquan Mountain after his defeat, and fought fiercely with Wu Sangui, the king of the Qing Dynasty who came to hunt him down. During the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the San Francisco Rebellion broke out, where Wu Sangui, king of Yunnan, and anti-Qing forces fought the Qing army for six years. At present, there are many sites in the territory of Wugong, such as Yunan Village, Chengmen Village, Jiangjun Mountain, Wugong Cave, Mingfeng Mountain, Sangangyu and so on. There are many legends and stories circulating, and Mengquan lake is nearby.

Mooncherry Lake has opened up a tour line on the lake, and plans to develop two new tour lines, Yunanzhai and Chengmenzhai. Hunan Jiashan Tourism Development Co., Ltd. is trying to build Mooncherry Lake into a well-known tourist and leisure resort at home and abroad after taking over the right to operate tourism.
