Shenyang is a second-tier city.

On May 30, 2023, the "City Business Charm Ranking" by the New First-tier Cities Research Institute released the list of new first-tier cities in 2023 in Shanghai. The four cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are first-tier cities. Fifteen cities including Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Suzhou, Xi'an, Nanjing, Changsha, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, Dongguan, Qingdao, Kunming, Ningbo and Hefei are new first-tier cities. No city in Northeast China was selected, and Shenyang was selected as a second-tier city.

Shenyang’s geographical environment

Shenyang City is located in the southern part of Northeast China and the central part of Liaoning Province. It is connected to the Liaodong Peninsula to the south and the foothills of Changbai Mountain to the north. It is an important junction between the Bohai Rim region and Northeast China. It borders Fushun City in the east, Benxi City and Liaoyang City in the south, Taian in Anshan City, Heishan in Jinzhou City, Zhangwu County in Fuxin City in the west, and Kezuohou Banner in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Changtu in Tieling City in the north. Shenyang City has a temperate humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and uneven inter-annual rainfall distribution. Most rainfall is concentrated from June to August. Therefore, June to August is a prone period for geological disasters. Collapses, landslides, and debris flows that are easily induced by precipitation factors are mainly distributed in low mountain and hilly areas. Therefore, low mountain and hilly areas are prone to natural geological disasters.
