Compared with the English requirements of other industries, I think the most prominent characteristics of tourism English are in two aspects.

First of all, from a formal point of view, tourist English focuses more on listening and speaking skills.

The tourists you face may come from different countries, and they all speak English. Americans, British, and Australians have different tastes when speaking it. For example, when a Frenchman asked me for "ice" while eating, I thought he wanted ice cubes, but actually he wanted "rice" for rice. Not to mention the Danes. They talk a lot and it’s hard to do their job without a solid hearing. Spoken English is particularly important in tourist English. You may not have a pure American, Australian or London accent, but your pronunciation must be accurate and easy for others to understand. Use short sentences instead of complex sentences, and try not to use uncommon words. For example, it doesn't matter if I don't understand the word "husband," but "her children's father" must be understood.

Secondly, in terms of content, Tourism English focuses more on breadth.

You must know something about food, housing, transportation, travel, shopping, and entertainment. You must be able to talk about politics, military, agriculture, industry, commerce, customs, religion, education, sports, medical care, technology, media, etc. perhaps. It may not be profound in every field, but you can’t know everything. You have to know a little bit of vocabulary commonly used in each major. Who knows what the next question from tourists will be.
