Taiwan’s new policy for independent travel in 2020

Individual travel by mainland residents to Taiwan began in 2011. In May 2008, the Kuomintang returned to power in Taiwan, and cross-strait relations took a historic turn.

Following the opening of group tours to Taiwan for residents of all mainland provinces in 2010, in 2011, after consultations with the Overseas Travel Association and the Taiwan Travel Association and arrangements for travel to Taiwan, the National Tourism Administration negotiated with the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and The Ministry of Public Security decided to officially implement individual travel for mainland residents to Taiwan on June 28, 2011.

On July 31, 2019, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism government portal reported that in view of the current cross-strait relations, it was decided to suspend individual travel pilots for mainland residents in 47 cities to Taiwan starting from August 1, 2019.
