Historical evolution of Boao Town:

As early as the Song Dynasty, the Dan family lived and thrived in Boao. In the first year of Tiansheng of the Song Dynasty (1023), the Dan family raised funds to build the Sanjiang Temple in Boao. At this time, the Dan family living here already had a certain number and scale.

Boao Town is named after Boao Port. In the early Ming Dynasty, it was called Boao Pu Township, and in the late Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Boao Township. The residents were Dan people.

The Qing Dynasty inherited the Ming Dynasty system, and it was still known as the 18th year of the Republic of China (1929).

In the 19th year of the Republic of China (1930), Boao Township was abolished and placed under the jurisdiction of Shoushan Town, Lehui County (renamed Fucheng Town in the 36th year of the Republic of China).

In July 1950, Boao came under the jurisdiction of the Second District (Lecheng) of Lehui County. In June 1955, Boao Township was established, under the jurisdiction of Lecheng District. In October 1958, Boao Township was abolished and placed under the jurisdiction of Chaoyang Commune. On December 1, 1958, Lehui and Qiongdong counties were merged into Qionghai County. In March 1961, Boao Commune was established separately from Chaoyang Commune.

In September 1983, it was renamed Boao District and administered six townships including Boao, Donghai, Dongyu, Tianyong, Zhulian and Chaolie. In 1987, Boao District was changed into Boao Town, and the 6 townships under its jurisdiction were changed into 6 administrative villages.

In 2003, the four administrative villages of Beishan, Bei'an, Shamei and Peilan in Jiuqujiang Township were abolished and merged with Chaoyang Township and Boao Town to form Boao Town. The town government is located in the original Boao Town.
