Zhengguo Temple Travel Guide

Introduction to Zhengguo Temple:

Zhengguo Buddhist Temple is one of the eight scenic spots in Zengcheng. Yu Binggong, a native of Xiangputang (now Fanfeng, Zhengguo Town) in Zengcheng, was born in the second year of Song Jingyao (1003). When he was born, he bowed to the sky with his hands folded. In order to avoid the plague, he moved to the foot of today's Chengfo Rock (Ruishan, about three kilometers away from the temple) to herd cattle. At the age of eight, he became a monk in Mingshan Temple, practiced hard, achieved good results, and gained enlightenment. The local gentry and common people called it "Cowboy Buddha" and "Guest Buddha". Taurus became a Buddha by sitting on the ground, gained enlightenment and changed its name to Zhengguo Market. At that time, Xu Peng, a famous person, wrote a pair of couplets, "It's an Indian Buddha, and it's sure that the sacred life will be given to the gods." In memory of Binfo, the villagers built a temple to worship his true image. Every year, the ninth day of the fifth lunar month is designated as Buddha's birthday, and activities such as Dragon Boat Festival and Buddha's Rock Bath Day are held, forming a unique folk custom.

The guest of honor gives birth to Buddha, the sacred object shows, and the merits reach the people. According to legend, during the Ming Dynasty, a daughter-in-law of the Huang family took her children to worship the Cowherd Buddha. On the way to the boat, a sudden gust of wind swept the children into the river. Huang's daughter-in-law is very sad. When she arrived at Zhengguo Temple, she even asked for three signatures in front of the guest Buddha, and all of them were signed, saying that the child had returned home safely under the escort of the Buddha. Huang's daughter-in-law was dubious. When she got home, she could not help beaming when she saw her child lying in bed and sleeping peacefully. She was deeply impressed by the miraculous powers of the guest Buddha. In the third year of Guangxu, the levee was in jeopardy because of flooding. The villagers prayed for the protection of Bingong Buddha, and Bingong showed his magical power. He became a villager to fight the flag of guest and rescue the levee. The flood suddenly subsided and turned to safety. The villagers are grateful to this distinguished guest for repeatedly showing his holiness. Therefore, three walking Buddhas were built in the temple. Every time the Buddha was born or there was an epidemic, they took the guest of honor to the countryside to drive away evil spirits.

Zhengguo Temple has a long history. Since the opening to the outside world, it has been dedicated to the Song, Yuan, Ming and even the Republic of China for more than 900 years. Celebrities who came to pay their respects to Binfo were Wen Tianxiang and Lu Xiufu, famous anti-Yuan celebrities in the Southern Song Dynasty, Hai Rui in the Ming Dynasty, Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the country, Chiang Kai-shek, chairman of the Kuomintang, and our beloved Chairman Zhu De.
