There is an ancient Italian building in the downtown area of ??Xi'an, which dates back more than 300 years. It is open to the public for free and there are not many tourists.

This is Xiaoyu’s travel diary, stop and go, and see Xi’an with me.

If you want to list down the cities with the most "classical" temperament in China, Xi'an is definitely on the list. This ancient capital of world civilization, with a history of 5,000 years of civilization and a history of 3,000 years of capital establishment, still has many cultural monuments to this day. If you walk around Xi'an and take a stroll, you might encounter several ruins from the Sui and Tang Dynasties and ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. But did you know that there is an ancient Italian building hidden in the downtown area of ??Xi'an?

This is the Wuxing Street Church.

Wuxing Street Church, also known as "Xi'an South Church", is named after it is located on Wuxing Street in Lianhu District, Xi'an City. This church was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1716 AD) and has a history of more than 300 years. This is an authentic Italian building, from investment to design and construction, all completed by Italians. In the early years of the Qing Dynasty, China was tolerant and open. The Italian missionary Madidi presided over the construction of this church in Xi'an. From the day of its completion, it became the Shaanxi Catholic Church.

In more than 300 years, this church has also experienced the development and changes of the times. Over a long period of time, Rose Girls' Primary and Secondary School, Joseph Boys' Primary School, Anthony Hospital and Mary Clinic were established here. Later, it became the factory building of Xi'an Candy Factory. It was not reopened to the outside world until it was returned to the church in 1980. Today, it has also become a cultural relic protection unit in Shaanxi.

Compared with before, the scale of Wuxing Street Church is now smaller than before, but it is still the largest and most beautiful existing church in Xi'an. Wuxing Street Church is a typical Roman architectural style, with blue-gray masonry columns towering into the clouds, solemn and magnificent. People who are used to seeing many Chinese classical buildings in Xi'an will be amazed.

However, if you take a closer look, you will find that this Italian-style building actually does "as the Romans do in Rome". Many traditional Chinese cultural elements can be found in the brick carvings of churches, such as auspicious clouds, vases, flowers, bats, etc., which are also the most common decorative patterns in Chinese classical architecture.

The Wuxing Street Church standing in a residential area of ??Xi'an is so special and unique. If I hadn’t passed by by chance, I would have never known that there was such a Western-style building in Xi’an! So, have you been here?
