It has been more than 2,200 years since Yixing was established as a county in the Qin Dynasty. In January 1988, Yixing County was abolished and Yixing City (county-level city) was established.

Yixing is located at the southern end of Jiangsu Province, in the center of the triangle of Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou, and at the junction of Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
