What are the regulations on pet plants and food when entering the UK?

Dogs, cats, ferrets and horses

You can bring dogs, cats and ferrets into the UK as long as they meet the relevant regulations of the pet travel scheme and do not need to be quarantined.

There are similar plans for horses.

Other animals

There are no restrictions on bringing pets such as rodents, rabbits, birds, invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles from EU countries into the UK.

It takes four months to bring pet rabbits and rodents into Britain from countries outside the European Union. Need to apply for rabies import licence for pets. Contact the International Trade Center (located in Carlisle) to learn more about the regulations on pet-friendly travel.

Non-native animals

Bringing non-native animals into the UK must comply with relevant regulations.

2. Plants

You can bring any plants into the UK from EU countries, provided that the plants meet the following requirements:

1. They are grown in EU countries

2. They are free from pests and diseases

3. They are used for your own use

Bringing plants from overseas to the UK

There are restrictions on bringing them into the UK from outside the EU, and most products are limited in weight and quantity, or cannot be implanted at all.

you can apply for a plant health certificate in the plant health department of the country where you are leaving. Holding this certificate shows that the plants you are carrying have been inspected and are not affected by dangerous pests and diseases, so they are suitable for entry.

online purchase or mailing

When purchasing plants online in countries or regions outside the EU, verify whether the seller can provide a plant health certificate.

if it is purchased in EU countries, a plant health certificate is not required.

Third, food

What food you can bring depends on your country, whether it is the EU or outside the EU.

The EU also includes Andorra, Canary Islands, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Norway and Switzerland.

Within the EU

If you are from an EU country, you can bring any fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products or other livestock products (such as fish, eggs and honey) into the UK.

outside the EU

outside the EU, you are not allowed to bring meat, meat products, milk, dairy products and potatoes into the UK unless you are in the following countries: Iceland, Faroe Islands and Greenland.

You can take food within 1kg in the above countries.

Fruits and vegetables

You can bring fruits and vegetables (except potatoes) within 2kg into the UK as long as they meet the following requirements:

1. Put them in your personal luggage

2. Use them for yourself, your family or friends (not allowed to sell them)

3. Be free from dangerous pests and diseases

Eggs, honey and fish. Such as eggs and honey (within 2kg)

2. Fish (within 2kg or a fish, whichever counts)

3. The fish you carry must be fresh, boiled, cooked, fried or smoked.

Punishment and compensation

If you return to the UK from a country or region outside the EU, and you have not declared the food you are not allowed to bring, then the food will be taken away. As a result, you may face penalties such as delays, charges and reports.
