The Leshan Giant Buddha is located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, at the intersection of the Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River, facing Leshan City across the river. It is the largest stone statue of Maitreya Buddha in the world today. Leshan Giant Buddha, also known as Lingyun Giant Buddha, is a seated statue of Maitreya Buddha with a total height of 71 meters. It is currently the largest cliff carving in China (cliff carvings are not grotto art). The Buddha statue was first excavated in the first year of Kaiyuan of the Tang Dynasty (713) and completed in the 19th year of Zhenyuan (803), which took about 90 years. In 1962, when the economy was quite difficult, the government allocated special funds to carry out the first overall maintenance of the Buddha statue since the founding of New China. In February 1982, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council. Around 1990, the government allocated funds to carry out comprehensive physical examinations throughout Buddha, and at the same time added many supporting facilities and service facilities. In December 1996, Mount Emei-Leshan Giant Buddha was officially listed on the World Natural and Cultural Heritage List. During an on-site inspection, Dr. Sansel Silva, a UNESCO World Heritage expert, praised “The Leshan Giant Buddha is comparable to other stone sculptures in the world, such as the Sphinx, Valley of the Nile Kings, etc.”
Leshan also has many delicious foods. Leshan sweet-skinned duck: Leshan people call it "braised duck". It is a famous delicacy in Leshan, Sichuan. It adopts the imperial cuisine technique of the Qing Dynasty. After being excavated and improved by folk artists, the brine is very distinctive, with brown-red color, crispy and slightly sweet skin, tender meat and pleasant aroma. Xiba Tofu is another famous dish in Leshan, Sichuan. About 20 kilometers down the Minjiang River from the Leshan Giant Buddha, there is a thousand-year-old ancient town in Xiba Town, Wutongqiao District. As early as the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, people in the town had the custom of eating tofu. The person who made Xiba Tofu famous was Master Yang Junhua, the sixth generation chef of the time-honored Qingyuan store. Xiba Ancient Town has beautiful scenery, especially the cool stream, which is the natural juice for grinding tofu. It is Leshan’s special hot pot, and everyone must try the best one. Stir-fry the chicken and base ingredients repeatedly, then put it into a pressure cooker together with fungus, konjac and other seasonal vegetables, and simmer for about 20 minutes. Finally, pour it into the hot pot pot, sprinkle coriander on the surface, and the spicy and delicious braised chicken is ready.
