I plan to travel to Hong Kong at the end of the year. Want to know how to choose gold ornaments?

The nature of gold

Gold is soft, malleable and tough, and its melting point is as high as 1000 degrees Celsius, so it is not easy to be oxidized. Although tempered at high temperature, it still does not affect its original properties. Therefore, there is a saying that "real gold is not afraid of stove fire", which means that gold is a very stable chemical element. However, because pure gold is too soft, it is only suitable for simple or claw-free ornaments. Complex designs need to be mixed with other metals to improve their hardness. In addition, ornaments must be welded. If pure gold is used as the hinge and weld of jewelry, it is easy to break and fall off. Therefore, other hard metals must be mixed in the hinge and weld to keep the inlay and make the connecting parts such as claws stable and not easy to break off. Therefore, when it is found that the interface color on the gold ware has changed, it cannot be immediately concluded that the gold color is not enough.

Types of gold

The classification of gold mainly depends on the composition of gold, and the unit of measurement is carat, referred to as K. The word "carat" comes from the Arabic word "Kirat".

The chemical name of platinum is platinum.

Legal protection of gold ornaments

According to the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, all shops selling gold ornaments are required to display notices of relevant laws to build consumers' confidence in Hong Kong's gold and gold alloy products.

Gold and gold alloy method

According to the Trade Descriptions (Marking) (Gold and Gold Alloys) Order, every gold or gold alloy product supplied or offered for supply in the course of business or operation at the retail level must be marked to show the purity of gold content, and suppliers must also issue detailed invoices or receipts for each product they supply.

Platinum decree

According to the Trade Descriptions (Marking) (Platinum) Order, every platinum product supplied or offered for supply in the course of business or operation at the retail level must be marked to show the purity of platinum components, and suppliers must also issue detailed invoices or receipts for each product they supply.

Marking of alloy ornaments

If different parts of gold ornaments have different colors, the law stipulates that they should be marked as follows:

Each part is marked with the color of the ornament itself; or

Marked by the total color of the whole gold ornament.

If other metals are added to the composition of gold ornaments besides gold or gold alloy, the part belonging to gold or gold alloy must be marked as described in the above "Color Marking", instead of the metal part of gold, which should be written separately on the invoice or receipt.

Provisions on gold content in welding parts of gold ornaments

Gold is soft and can only be made into simple or claw-free ornaments. Some gold ornaments with complicated designs must be mixed with other metals to strengthen their hardness. In addition, some gold ornaments that need to be welded are easy to break and fall off if they are welded with pure gold. Therefore, other hard metals must be mixed at the welding position to keep the stability of the inlay and jaw. The law also stipulates the gold content of these welding positions and hinges:

The smoothness of the welding position used for pure gold ornaments shall not be less than 800%, that is, 800.

.916.6 gold ornaments, and the welding position shall not be lower than 750.

. 750 carved ornaments or watchcases, etc. , the welding position used shall not be less than 740.

. K platinum jewelry, if it is 750 or 585, the welding position used shall not be less than 500.

If the weight of the welding position does not exceed 5% of the weight of the gold ornament, it is not necessary to mark the color of the welding position on the gold ornament, but only the color of the main body of the gold ornament itself.

Marking area size regulation

The color code engraved on gold ornaments, whether Arabic numerals or words, should not be less than 0.5 square millimeter.

Receipts and notices

When selling gold ornaments, stores must provide customers with receipts or invoices, detailing the name, address, price, date and details of gold ornaments, including the fineness, purity mark and weight of gold ornaments and welds. Stores must keep copies of receipts and invoices for at least three years. Therefore, it is best for consumers to keep the receipt for three years after purchasing gold ornaments for future investigation.

According to the law, shops must display legal notices in places where gold ornaments are displayed, with an area of not less than 2 10/0mm by 297mm and a font height of not less than 5mm. At present, these notices can be seen in gold shops and places where gold ornaments are sold in Hong Kong.

skill

platinum

Buying gold ornaments is not limited to gold, but also other colors, such as white and rose, which are called "platinum" and "rose gold". Platinum is different from platinum. "Platinum" is mainly composed of gold mixed with at least one white metal such as silver or palladium. This material is mostly used to make high-priced ornaments such as jewelry and watches. Platinum is "platinum" but not "platinum", it is another precious metal. This material is used in many industries, such as jewelry, chemical equipment, electronics, dentists and automobiles. When buying 18K platinum, the maximum gold content is 75%. Platinum cannot be marked with PT, only gold and its purity can be marked according to its purity. For example, 18K platinum can only be stamped with "18K" and "G750". Only "18K" and "G750" can be written on the file, which represents gold with fineness of 18K or 750.

Gold jewelry maintenance

Avoid contact between cosmetics, perfumes, acidic substances and other chemicals and gold ornaments, which will make the surface of gold ornaments lose luster. Therefore, the gold ornaments should be removed as soon as possible after wearing, soaked in neutral lukewarm soapy water and dried with a soft cloth.

Avoid wearing pure gold ornaments when swimming, because swimming pool water contains chlorine and seawater contains salt. In addition, it should be noted that sweat will also become an aggressive chemical substance when it comes into contact with gold ornaments, which will cause oxidative damage to gold ornaments.

When discoloration occurs, the gold wares should be put into neutral detergent or washed with some special detergents to restore luster.

Weight conversion

The weight of pure gold jewelry is calculated at 20 cents. According to the Weights and Measures Ordinance, which came into effect in 1989, one or two cents is equal to 37.429 grams.

Gold jewelry price

The entry gold price of pure gold jewelry is determined by the Gold Price Committee under the Hong Kong and Kowloon Pearl Jade Gold and Silver Jewelry Merchants Association, taking into account the daily international gold price and market environment, in order to safeguard the reasonable profits of the industry and the interests of consumers.

Hong Kong and Kowloon Pearl Jade, Gold and Silver Jewelry Chamber of Commerce Limited

The "Quality Gold Symbol" program of Hong Kong and Kowloon Pearl Gem Jade Gold and Silver Jewelry Chamber of Commerce Co., Ltd. aims to improve the quality requirements of gold jewelry manufacturers and protect the rights and interests of consumers. The two associations set up a "color review group" and a "publicity group" to promote the project.

In addition to spot-checking the gold ornaments of member firms from time to time, in mid-August of each year, the "color inspection team" begins to conduct spot checks on the gold ornaments of the next year. Supervisors of the two associations went to the participating companies to extract samples of gold ornaments and sent them to laboratories recognized by the Hong Kong government for testing. Those who meet the statutory standards will begin to replace the "high-quality gold-lettered signboard" for the next year at the end of1February for members to display in shop windows or conspicuous places for consumers to identify. After the expiration, the above sampling work must be repeated, and the next year's "high-quality gold mark" can be issued only after passing the test. If a store sells gold ornaments with substandard colors, the chamber of commerce will not only take back its "high-quality gold symbol", but may also dissolve the store.
