The German Football League (Bundesliga), referred to as the Bundesliga, is the highest level of German football club competition. It was established by the German Football Association in Dortmund on July 28, 1962 and began in the 1963-64 season.
The Bundesliga has 18 teams participating in the competition, adopting a home and away double round-robin system. The champion will receive a championship prize plate commonly known as the "salad plate"; the bottom two teams are directly relegated to Germany. Football League 2 (Bundesliga 2); the third-to-last team will compete in the play-offs with the third-placed team in Bundesliga 2, and the winner will participate in the Bundesliga next season. The top four teams in the Bundesliga qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the fifth and sixth teams in the Bundesliga qualify for the Europa League. All Bundesliga teams can directly qualify for the German Football Association Cup. The Bundesliga champion and the German Cup champion will participate in the German Super Cup.
