Xinhuanet Nanjing, August 26th (Reporter Cai, Zhou Runjian) The Purple Mountain Observatory of China Academy of Sciences reported that a total lunar eclipse will occur on the 28th. By then, as long as the weather is fine, most parts of China (except the extreme west) can enjoy the wonderful astronomical phenomena of lunar eclipse and total lunar eclipse.

Eclipses can be divided into penumbral eclipse, partial eclipse and total eclipse. The middle part of the earth's shadow is called umbra, and it is surrounded by penumbra. A penumbral eclipse occurs when the moon enters the penumbra of the earth, a partial eclipse occurs when a part of the moon enters the umbra of the earth, and a total eclipse occurs when the moon completely enters the umbra of the earth. Like a solar eclipse, a solar eclipse occurs almost every year. However, for a specific area, some solar eclipses cannot be observed, because the time of solar eclipse is not necessarily at night.

Cao Yun, an associate researcher at Purple Mountain Observatory of China Academy of Sciences, said that after the total lunar eclipse on March 4th this year, the public in China will enjoy another wonderful total lunar eclipse.

According to astronomical calculations, the whole process of the total lunar eclipse on the 28th was 16: 5 1 (Beijing time, the same below), and the moon began to enter the Earth's umbra, and the whole moon was swallowed up by the Earth's umbra at 17: 52. Because the sun hasn't set yet, we can't see the eclipse. Since then, from the eastern coastal areas of China, the moon that has been submerged in the umbra of the earth has risen from the east, that is, the moon rises with food and the sun sets from the west. At 18: 37, the moon entered the deepest part of the earth's umbra, that is, the center of the moon was closest to the center of the earth's umbra. 19: 23, the moon began to leave the umbra of the earth, and the moon gradually began to shine. With the passage of time, the bright surface gradually changed from small to large. At 20: 24, the moon completely broke away from the umbra of the earth, which was the last contact, and the solar eclipse came to an end.

Cao Yun said that although the public can't watch the whole process of the total lunar eclipse, they can enjoy the eclipse with food, which can be described as "every cloud has a silver lining". In addition, the most wonderful moment of the total lunar eclipse, that is, the moon entering the deepest part of the Earth's umbra, can also be appreciated by the public.

It is understood that when the total lunar eclipse occurs, the sunlight in the area where the moon is located cannot be directed at all. But through the earth's atmosphere, there will still be a little sunlight refracted into the earth's shadow. Therefore, from the earth's point of view, the moon did not disappear from the sky, but showed a rare bronze color, which is commonly known as the "red moon."

Cao Yun reminded that the observation conditions of this total lunar eclipse are relatively good in terms of time and season. Therefore, citizens with conditions must not miss this opportunity. Missed this time, if the Chinese public wants to watch the total lunar eclipse again, they will have to wait until June 20 1 1 16.

Observation prompt

As it has been rainy in Beijing for the last two days, it will be very difficult to observe the total lunar eclipse if the sky is cloudy tomorrow night. If the weather is fine, citizens can choose the suburbs in the southeast of this city to observe the total lunar eclipse with naked eyes or special instruments in a relatively open place. As people observe at night, citizens with children must be careful not to let their children get lost.
