12% off on battery life in winter? BYD Dolphin's battery life measured in Northeast China can reach 350km

Bitauto original? Entering the cold winter, for pure electric vehicles, the most worrying thing is undoubtedly the problem of excessive power consumption and serious degradation of cruising range.

In order to solve the pain points of battery life in winter, BYD e-platform 3.0 has added core technologies such as eight-in-one motor assembly, heat pump system, and battery direct cooling and direct heating to the new car, aiming to further improve the battery life performance of the new car. . So, is the performance of BYD e-platform 3.0 satisfactory in terms of battery life in winter? For this reason, we came to Shenyang, Liaoning Province, to test its endurance in the cold winter of Northeast China.

It should be noted that our test is not an extreme cold test. The current average temperature at night and during the day in Shenyang City is around -10°C to 5°C, which is also in line with the winter driving climate in most northern cities. Condition.

The model for this winter endurance test is the Dolphin 405km fashion version priced at 108,800 yuan. The Dolphin is also the first model of BYD's new e-platform 3.0.

Everyone must be familiar with Dolphin. This stylish and cute small electric car has been a hot-selling model in the 100,000-class pure electric car market since its launch. It also achieved 8,809 units in November. sales performance.

We have also conducted in-depth tests on Dolphin in Guangzhou before, including acceleration time from 100 kilometers, braking distance, endurance test, charging efficiency, etc. Detailed test data can be found in the figure below.

Our actual measurement shows that the power loss ratio of Dolphin's cruising range under urban operating conditions of 28°C is 1:1. The actual cruising range is not discounted. In theory, it can reach 405km, and the performance is satisfactory enough.

But under low temperature conditions in winter, will the cruising range of the Dolphin be significantly reduced? Let's go test it out and see.

In this winter endurance test, we will drive the dolphin around the Shenyang urban ring road, starting from the World Trade Hilton Hotel, passing through Changqing Street, Danfu Expressway, Fourth Ring Road, Shenliao Road and the Second Ring Road road, and finally return to the starting point.

The mileage in a single lap is about 107km. We will drive 2.5 laps, and the total distance is nearly 280km. The test conditions include urban congested road conditions, urban low-speed road conditions, urban expressway conditions, and high-speed road conditions.

The temperature in Shenyang on the day of the test was -10~8℃, and the outdoor temperature at the time of departure was 5℃. We adjusted the air conditioner temperature to 24°C and the wind speed to automatic. There were two adult passengers in the car, both weighing about 75kg, with a small amount of luggage.

Before departure, we fully charged the vehicle. The instrument panel showed that the remaining battery capacity was 100% and the remaining cruising range was 405km, which was consistent with the officially calibrated cruising range. Select the ECO mode as the driving mode, select the larger feedback mode for the energy feedback intensity, and clear the subtotal mileage to zero.

The traffic flow on urban roads in Shenyang during the morning peak is not very large. Except for urban roads with more traffic lights, fleets can move forward smoothly on other road conditions, avoiding frequent stops and starts on congested roads that increase energy consumption. losses.

When driving on urban roads, Dolphin's compact body and flexible steering make it easier and more comfortable to drive, and it can easily shuttle through urban traffic.

When driving through the Danfu Expressway, we can also feel that the power response of the Dolphin is brisk enough when driving at high speeds, and the power is more than enough to meet the needs of daily use.

Of course, in this test we used a fleet driving method. When driving at high speed, the speed of the fleet is basically controlled between 80-100km/h, which can also reduce the power consumption during high-speed driving. .

During the test, we recorded every 50 kilometers traveled. It can be seen that as the mileage increases, the power consumption of Dolphin is relatively linear, and the battery does not lose power faster as the mileage increases.

After 7.3 hours of relay driving, we finally drove the Dolphin for 282km, with an average speed of 38km/h. The energy consumption curve showed that the average power consumption in the last 50 kilometers was 10.5kWh/100km.

At this time, the instrument panel shows that the remaining power of the SOC is 21%, and the remaining cruising range is 84km. This test consumed 79% of the power in one day, and the meter shows that the cruising range has dropped by 321km.

In other words, the power loss ratio between the actual cruising range and the displayed cruising range is 1:1.14. Such test results are indeed very good, and the battery life in winter is only 12% off.

In the low-temperature driving environment of Northeast China, the theoretical cruising range of the Dolphin can reach more than 350km when driven leisurely in urban conditions. Based on a round-trip commuting distance of 50km a day, charging once a week is enough, which also meets the needs of most consumers for urban commuting.

Of course, we must also view such good results rationally. After all, most of the entire test road conditions were urban expressway conditions, with a small proportion of highways and urban congested road conditions, and the entire test was driven in formation.

If it is used in extreme environments with lower temperatures, faster highway conditions, or a more "violent" driving mode, the actual cruising range of the Dolphin in winter will be greater.

For a 100,000-class electric car, Dolphin’s 12.2% discount on winter cruising range is already a very good result. What are the secrets of dolphins that are not afraid of the cold winter? Only in this way can the battery life last longer in winter.

First of all, let’s understand what is the main reason for the decline in battery life of electric vehicles in winter?

In fact, it is because when using the car in winter, the heating demand for the passenger compartment and battery thermal management increases. After all, pure electric vehicles do not carry a lot of heat when the engine of a fuel vehicle is working, so they need to consume a lot of battery energy. To maintain the passenger cabin heating and battery temperature; and the increase in air density in low temperature environments will also cause increased driving resistance.

To put it simply, the increase in driving energy consumption and heating energy consumption has greatly shortened the cruising range of electric vehicles under low temperature conditions.

In order to allow electric vehicles to have good battery life in low-temperature environments in winter, BYD e-platform 3.0 solves the problems of driving energy consumption and heating energy consumption from the perspective of the entire vehicle.

First of all, Dolphin comes standard with an efficient eight-in-one electric power system and a flat wire motor, and optimizes the vehicle's aerodynamic design, thereby reducing vehicle driving losses in winter and making driving more efficient.
