When is the best time to go to Zao Juhyo?

The Zao Mountain Range is located in the central, north-south Ou Mountains of the Tohoku region, at the junction of Yamagata Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture. Tree ice begins to form in December every year, and slowly grows as the weather gets colder. The best viewing period is in February. The precious tree ice can be seen from both sides of Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. At night, it’s the dreamy ice tree’s turn to light up.

About Zao

Zao's fronds are made of ice and snow. Ice is formed on coniferous trees such as "Great White Fir" only when the weather and terrain meet special conditions.
