Tongliao belongs to the plateau area.

Tongliao is located at the intersection of Inner Mongolia Plateau and Northeast Plain, with an altitude of 200 to 1000 meters.

Tongliao is a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Tongliao City is located on the slope of Lower Mongolia Plateau in Liaohe Plain. The general outline of the landform is high in the south and low in the north, and low in the middle. The northern part is the rocky mountain and hilly area at the southern foot of Daxing 'anling Mountains.

Tongliao City is located in the mid-latitude, and belongs to the mid-temperate arid and semi-arid continental monsoon climate, with many droughts and strong winds in spring, concentrated high-temperature rainfall in summer, short and cool autumn, rapid temperature drop, frost in the north and late in the south, and long and cold winter.

The climatic conditions are the same as rain and heat, which is beneficial to plant growth and material transformation and accumulation. Drought, flood and windy weather are the main natural disasters that affect agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry production.
