Astragalus

(Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge)

Astragalus is a valuable Chinese medicinal material. According to the pharmacopoeia, it has the effects of nourishing qi, strengthening the surface, and diuresis. Folks also have the habit of taking astragalus to prepare nourishing and strengthening foods in winter. Therefore, the annual consumption of astragalus is very large. The medicinal part is the root. Once the root is dug out, the entire plant will no longer survive. The wild resources of Astragalus are becoming increasingly scarce due to large-scale mining. For this reason, the plant was determined to be a national third-level protected plant.

Astragalus is a perennial herb with a plant height of about 1 meter. The main root is 1-2 cm in diameter, can reach more than 1 meter in length, and penetrates deep into the soil. Aboveground stems erect, ribbed; hairy. The leaves are alternate, odd-numbered and compound, with 21-31 leaflets. The leaflets are elliptical, 7-30 mm long and 4-12 mm wide, with rounded or slightly concave apex and rounded base. The stipules are lanceolate, 6 mm long. Racemes grow in the upper leaf axils of the stems, with 10-20 flowers per inflorescence. The flowers are light yellow, with a butterfly-shaped corolla, obovate flag petals, slightly concave tops, and wing petals and keel petals nearly equal in length. The ovary has a stalk. After flowering, the pod is swollen, oblong, 2-3 cm long, with a short beak at the top. The outer part of the fruit is covered with short hairs and there are 3-8 seeds inside.

Astragalus is produced in North my country, Northeast China, Inner Mongolia and Northwest China. It is mainly produced in Shanxi, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Hebei and other provinces. It is also distributed in the former Soviet Union, North Korea and Mongolia. In order to protect wild resources, plowing should be appropriately restricted. During the plowing season, it is strictly forbidden to harvest young plants after the seeds have matured and fallen to the ground. In order to expand resources, we should vigorously develop planting or artificially sow young plants, and then keep them in a semi-wild state until harvested.

Astragalus is a leguminous plant, which is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its main pharmacological effects are "replenishing qi and strengthening the surface", "diminishing water", and "supporting toxins and promoting muscle growth". What is "Yi Qi"? Astragalus can be used in any situation that Chinese medicine considers to be "qi deficiency", "insufficient qi and blood", or "sag of middle qi". Usually, the body is weak, gets tired easily, and often feels weak, which is often a manifestation of "qi deficiency". Anemia is often caused by "insufficiency of Qi and blood". Symptoms such as anal prolapse and uterine prolapse are often considered to be "sag of middle qi". For people with the above symptoms, it is beneficial to eat some astragalus in winter. Of course, it is best to take it under the guidance of a doctor.

Some people are prone to catching colds when the weather changes. Traditional Chinese medicine calls it "the external surface is not solidified", and astragalus can be used to solidify the external surface. Taking astragalus regularly can prevent frequent colds. There is a famous prescription in traditional Chinese medicine called "Yupingfeng Powder", which contains three herbs, the main ingredient of which is astragalus, which can be used to treat frequent colds.

People who are weak or older often have some edema in their lower limbs. If you have "qi deficiency", you can also take astragalus regularly. People with chronic kidney disease may also often suffer from edema. Astragalus is sometimes commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine treatment.

The so-called "supporting poison and promoting muscle growth" means that wounds can recover easily after surgery, or abscesses that have not healed for a long time can become suppurative and produce muscle.

When taking astragalus, you should take it under the guidance of a doctor and in an appropriate amount according to your individual physique. There are many ways to eat astragalus. Here are a few:

1. Use about 30 grams of astragalus every day. , take after decoction. Or boil it in water and drink it as tea for later generations. Use 30 grams of astragalus, add 15 grams of wolfberry, boil it in water and take it. It will be more effective for people with weak qi and blood.

2. Take about 50 grams of Astragalus membranaceus, decoct it into soup, and use the decoction liquid to cook rice or porridge to turn into Astragalus rice or Astragalus porridge, which is also very beneficial.

3. Some people also like to put some astragalus when roasting meat, chicken, or duck to increase the nourishing effect, and the effect is also good.

Current situation

< p>An endangered species. Also known as Astragalus membranaceus, it is mainly distributed in northern my country. It is a relatively rare traditional Chinese medicinal material and the roots are used as medicine. Due to long-term large-scale mining, the number of wild astragalus has decreased sharply in recent years. If protection and artificial propagation are not strengthened, it is in danger of becoming extinct.

Morphological characteristics

Perennial herb, 50 to 150 cm tall; main root thick and long, 1 to 3 cm in diameter; stem upright, with thin ribs, covered with white villous hairs. Odd-pinnately compound leaves with villous rachis; leaflets (13 to 21 to 27 (to 31)), oval to oblong-ovate, 7 to 30 mm long, 4 to 12 mm wide, with rounded or blunt apex. Slightly concave, sometimes with small spine tips, rounded base, with white pubescence underneath; stipules are narrowly lanceolate, about 6 mm long, with white villous hairs.

Racemes are born in the upper leaf axils, with flowers (5 to 10 to 20), and the pedicels are significantly elongated during the fruit stage; the flowers are yellow or light yellow, (12 to 15 to 18 mm long), with linear bracts; the calyx is bell-shaped. , 5 to 7 mm long, with white villous hair, short calyx teeth, 1/5 or 1/4 of the calyx tube, triangular shape; flag petal obovate, apex slightly concave, base almost clawless; wing petals and keel The valves are nearly equal in length, slightly shorter than the flag valve, and both have long claws; the ovary is stalked and covered with pubescence. The pods are swollen, egg-shaped and oblong, 2 to 3 (-3.5) cm long, with a short beak at the top and a long stalk at the base. The pericarp is membranous, covered with black pubescence, sometimes white hairs or a mixture of both, with 3 One 8 seeds.

Characteristics

Astragalus is distributed in temperate and warm temperate regions of my country and is a deep-rooted plant. It likes a cool climate, has strong drought and cold tolerance, and is intolerant to heat and waterlogging. Too high temperatures often inhibit plant growth, and excessive soil moisture often causes root rot. It should grow in sandy soil with deep, fertile, loose and well-drained soil. On clay soil, it will have many roots and grow slowly. It mostly grows in forest edges, shrubs, forest grasslands, under sparse forests and meadows. The flowering period (6) is from July to August, and the fruiting period (7) is from August to September.

Protection value

Astragalus root is used as medicine. It is often used as a tonic Chinese medicine and also as a veterinary drug. It has a large sales volume. A 10-fold water immersion of rhizomes is effective in inhibiting potato late blight. Astragalus also has the function of retaining water and soil.

Protection measures

The places where Astragalus grows are generally not included in nature reserves. In order to prevent it from becoming extinct, it is recommended that the medicinal material procurement department should determine the purchase amount according to the specific conditions of different places and vigorously inform the public Publicize that seedlings should be protected when digging, and growing plants should be appropriately retained to facilitate reproduction and sustainable use. The cultivation area should be further expanded.

Key points of cultivation

Propagate by seeds. In the north, sow seeds from April to May in the spring or from September to October in the autumn. Since the seeds often have hard water-impermeable seed coats, appropriate mechanical damage should be done before sowing. After sowing, pay attention to maintaining soil moisture and keeping the temperature at 18-18 It takes about 9 days to germinate at -20°C. When there is excessive rainfall, water should be drained in time.

1 Medicinal Syndrome

Astragalus is used for excessive sweating and edema. "The Synopsis of the Golden Chamber" contains the largest amount of astragalus in the Astragalus, Peony, Guizhi, and Bitter Wine Decoction, with 5 taels used. It is mainly used to treat "swelling of the body, fever, sweating and thirst, with symptoms like Feng Shui, sweat staining clothes, and a yellow color like cypress juice." Feng Shui refers to systemic edema; sweating can stain clothes, indicating that the amount of sweating is relatively large. The simplest astragalus prescription in "The Synopsis of the Golden Chamber" is Fangji Huangqi Decoction, with 6 medicinal flavors. It is mainly used to treat "rheumatism with floating pulse, heavy body and sweating, and bad wind". Or there may be sweating on the head,...the swelling below the waist may reach the vagina, and it is difficult to bend or stretch." It can be seen that sweating and edema are also present. Simply put, astragalus treats swelling due to sweating.

The so-called sweating is mostly spontaneous sweating. That is, when you do not take diaphoretic drugs or exercise strenuously, and the temperature and room temperature are normal, the amount of sweating is large, and may be accompanied by shortness of breath. Symptoms such as fatigue, bad wind, dizziness, and susceptibility to colds are summarized in traditional Chinese medicine as "spontaneous sweating due to qi deficiency." The degree of sweating is relatively serious, and the clothes and quilt are often soaked. In some cases, sweat stains can be seen and turn yellow, and the sweating is obvious on the upper body. Clinically, some patients do not complain of sweating as the main complaint, but through consultation, it can be learned that the patient usually sweats a lot, and sweats easily after a little physical activity, or the skin is moist.

For the folk treatment of spontaneous sweating, astragalus and red date soup is commonly used: 15-30g of astragalus and 15 red dates, decoction and taken twice a day. You can also use the Chinese patent medicine Astragalus Oral Liquid. "Medical Zhongzhongshenxilu" records that Zhang Xichun treated a woman in Cangzhou who was in her twenties. She suffered from fullness and tightness in the chest and flanks, palpitations, and spontaneous sweating when she moved. The family bought a pack of astragalus in advance, so she decocted it and took it, and she recovered after taking it. For postpartum hyperhidrosis, it has been reported that 30g of astragalus and 30g of motherwort can be decoctioned and taken twice a day. My experience is that for people with spontaneous perspiration and wind aversion, you can use Guizhi Decoction plus astragalus: 20g of astragalus, 10g of cinnamon twig, 10g of white peony root, 3g of licorice, 10g of ginger, and 10 red dates, decoction in water and take it.

The so-called swelling is mainly systemic edema, but it is most obvious in the lower limbs. Due to the change in body position, the face is swollen in the morning and the lower limbs are swollen in the afternoon. Although some people have no obvious edema, their muscles are soft and their bodies are obese, giving them a bloated appearance. Due to edema, patients often feel that their bodies are heavy, their movements are inflexible, and their joints are in severe pain. Lu Dingpu's "Lenglu Medical Talk" in the Qing Dynasty recorded: Wang suffered from swelling from the top of his head to his heels, often closed stools, hoarseness, and obstruction of bowel movements. His life was in danger. He sought medical treatment from Xu Shanlin in Haining. Xu used 120g of raw astragalus and 30g of glutinous rice to cook a large bowl of porridge and asked the patient to take it frequently with a small spoon. After taking the medicine, the asthma subsides and the bowel movements are relieved, and then the swelling all over the body subsides and heals. Mr. Fan Wenhu, a famous doctor in modern times, treated a case of postpartum edema. The abdomen was as big as a drum and gradually spread to the whole body. When pressed softly, the skin did not shine. The patient is asthmatic, has soft pulse, and is in critical condition. Fan Wenhu followed the above method, decoction 30g of raw astragalus, boil half a cup of glutinous rice, make porridge, and eat lightly. The swelling will disappear in 5 days. According to legend, in the winter of 1920, Hu Shi suffered from diabetes, chronic nephritis, heart disease, and edema all over his body. He was not cured by the Union Hospital. He later asked Chinese medicine doctor Lu Zhongan to cure his illness with a large dose of astragalus (10 taels, equivalent to about 300g) combined with Codonopsis pilosula. This suggests that astragalus can reduce swelling.

2 Applications

* Used for Qi deficiency, fatigue, or depression of Qi, anal prolapse, or uterine prolapse. To replenish qi and strengthen the spleen, it is often combined with Codonopsis pilosula, Atractylodes, etc.; for replenishing qi and raising yang and lifting depression, it is often combined with Codonopsis pilosula, Cimicifuga, Bupleurum, Zhigancao, etc.

*Used for spontaneous sweating due to superficial deficiency. For spontaneous sweating due to superficial deficiency, it is often combined with ephedra root, wheat flour, oysters, etc.; for those with superficial deficiency who are prone to wind and cold, it can be used together with Fangfeng and Atractylodes.

*It is used for patients with insufficient Qi and blood, sores and ulcers that are retracted, pus that does not ulcerate or ulcers that persist for a long time. If it is used for invagination of sores or long-lasting ulcers, it can be used with Codonopsis pilosula, cinnamon, angelica root, etc.; if it is used for pus that does not ulcerate, it can be used with angelica, honeysuckle, angelica, pangolin, and saponaria.

* Used for edema, athlete's foot, and puffy face. With Atractylodes macrocephala, Poria cocos, etc.

(l) Chronic kidney disease

Mr. Yue Meizhong, a famous modern doctor, was inspired by the experience of astragalus porridge in treating edema in "Lenglu Medical Talk" and created astragalus porridge to treat chronic nephritis in children. to good results. The prescription is: 30g of raw astragalus, 30g of raw barley kernels, 15g of adzuki beans, 9g of chicken gizzard powder, 2 kumquat cakes, and 30g of glutinous rice. First, boil astragalus with 600ml of water for 20 minutes, remove the residue, then add barley kernels and adzuki beans, cook for 30 minutes, then add chicken giblets and glutinous rice, and cook into porridge. Make a daily dose and take it in 2 divided doses. Chew 1 piece of kumquat cake after eating. This prescription is highly effective in treating residual edema in chronic nephritis and kidney nephritis, and is also effective in eliminating proteinuria. In fact, using astragalus and glutinous rice alone to cook porridge is also effective. The method is as follows: 30-120g of astragalus, 30-50g of glutinous rice, first fry the astragalus, extract the juice, then add the glutinous rice, make porridge, and eat it every day. Astragalus porridge is a traditional Chinese medicinal porridge that has been popular in the Song Dynasty. Su Shi wrote a poem "Astragalus porridge is recommended for spring dishes", which shows that Su Shi had eaten astragalus porridge.

People also use steamed duck with astragalus to treat kidney disease. The method is: 1 live duck (about 1kg), 60g of astragalus. First kill and wash the duck, immerse it in boiling water and fish it out. Add astragalus, ginger, green onion, a small amount of pepper, and put it in the belly. Add a little water and wine, sew with cotton thread, put in a basin and steam for 2 hours. Remove astragalus, eat meat and drink soup. One duck can be eaten in 3 days. It can be used as a dietary treatment for chronic kidney disease (Popular Medicine, Issue 4, 1999).

In clinical treatment of chronic kidney disease, I often use Yupingfeng Powder combined with Zhenwu Decoction. If I insist on taking it, it has the effect of improving kidney function.

(2) Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases

① Hypertension: When I treat elderly people with high blood pressure and edema of the lower limbs, I often use Fangji Huangqi Decoction plus Pueraria lobata, which can effectively eliminate edema. and antihypertensive effects. Fangji Huangqi Decoction is a recipe from "The Synopsis of the Golden Chamber". My experience with the dosage is: 30g of Astragalus, 12g of Atractylodes, 12g of Fangji, 3g of licorice, 3 slices of ginger, 10 red dates. If you often remove the licorice, add 30g of kudzu. If you have high blood lipids , add 20g of Alisma, and those with chest pain and dizziness, add 10g of Chuanxiong and 12g of Salvia miltiorrhiza.

②Ischemic heart disease: 50g of Astragalus membranaceus daily, decocted in water and taken three times. 92 cases of ischemic heart disease were treated and compared with Xintongding and Danshen tablets respectively. The results showed that the astragalus group had better curative effect. Not only can symptoms such as angina pectoris be significantly relieved, but it can also improve various clinical objective indicators such as electrocardiogram and impedance cardiogram.

③ Cerebrovascular accident: Fan Wenhu, a famous doctor in Ningbo in modern times, is good at using this prescription to treat stroke and hemiplegia. Astragalus is commonly used in 60-120g. He said: "Stroke is a symptom. There are various theories that it belongs to fire, wind and phlegm. Treatment according to the law is often ineffective. This is an extreme case of qi deficiency and there are many stasis of veins. Du Wang Qing Ren Bu Yang Huan Wu Decoction is credible. Astragalus can It’s okay to increase it to four taels, and take dozens of doses in a row.” Buyang Huanwu Decoction is the empirical formula of Wang Qingren, a famous doctor in the Qing Dynasty. It consists of: 60g of astragalus, 10g of angelica, 10g of chuanxiong, 15g of red peony, 10g of peach kernel, 6g of safflower, and 10g of earthworm. Indications: Hemiplegia, crooked mouth and eyes, slurred speech, drooling at the corners of the mouth, dry stool, frequent urination, and incontinence of enuresis. It is used in modern times to treat cerebral infarction, cerebral thrombosis, diabetes, etc., and has good curative effect.

(3) Diabetes

For those with diabetes accompanied by edema and yellow complexion, I often use Fangji Huangqi Decoction plus Pueraria lobata, etc. If you have lower limb ulcers or deep thrombosis caused by diabetes, use 60g of raw astragalus, 30g of kudzu root, 30g of Achyranthes bidentata, 30g of dendrobium, 30g of red peony root, 20g of salvia miltiorrhiza, etc.

(4) After tumor chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery

Patients with anemia, edema, loss of appetite, easy sweating and colds are often indications for the use of astragalus. Huangqi Jianzhong Decoction, Shiquan Dabu Decoction, etc. are commonly used in clinical practice. I once treated a patient with multiple myeloma whose main symptoms were excessive sweating, aversion to wind, and high fever. I used 60g of astragalus, 10g of cinnamon, and Zhenwu decoction. After taking the medicine for 1 week, the sweating and aversion to wind were significantly reduced. After 1 year of treatment, , the condition is stable and there is almost no fever. Shiquan Dabu Decoction is a commonly used physical strength enhancer after tumors, and is commonly used in Japan. Its composition is: 15g of astragalus, 3g of cinnamon, 5g of ginseng, 10g of atractylodes, 12g of poria, 3g of licorice, 6g of angelica, 6g of chuanxiong, 12g of rehmannia root, 10g of white peony root. Decoction in water and take 2-3 times a day. Traditionally in China, there are pills and ointments, and in Japan there are granules, which are mainly for long-term use.

(5) Chronic rhinitis

Commonly used Yupingfeng powder: 15g of Astragalus, 12g of Atractylodes, and 10g of Fangfeng.

It is mainly used for patients with spontaneous sweating caused by qi deficiency and prone to colds. It is often used for allergic rhinitis, hay fever, asthma, colds in the elderly, etc. 3 slices of ginger and 10 red dates can be added to the recipe.

(6) Osteoporosis

Those with osteoporosis, lumbar spondylosis, cervical spondylosis, anemia, etc., who have joint pain, numbness, spontaneous sweating, etc., can use Astragalus, Guizhi and Wuwu. Soup. Composition: 30g astragalus, 10g cassia twig, 15g white peony, 3 slices of ginger, 12 red dates. Licorice cannot be used in this recipe. At that time, Fan Wenhu tried to treat doctor Shen's daughter-in-law's soreness and numbness in her limbs. She took Guizhi Decoction with a flavor, but the treatment did not work. Fan used the original prescription of Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Decoction, and it was effective after 2 doses. Guizhi Decoction and Astragalus Guizhi Wuwu Decoction only differ in licorice and astragalus, but the difference between the two drugs is quite different (see "Wei Changchun Clinical Experience Collection").

(7) Ulcers that do not heal for a long time

Astragalus is a traditional sore medicine that has myogenic effects and is especially suitable for "chronic sores", that is, suppuration of ulcers that do not heal for a long time. Sexually transmitted infections. It manifests as clear and thin pus, flat wound surface, and poor general condition. Mr. Zhao Bingnan, a famous modern TCM surgical doctor, has a recipe of astragalus ointment, which is made by frying astragalus into a thick paste, adding an equal amount of honey, and mixing evenly before use.

For upper gastrointestinal ulcers, such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, Huangqi Jianzhong Decoction can be used. Composition: 15g of astragalus, 10g of cassia twig, 15g of white peony root, 6g of licorice, 3 slices of ginger, 12 red dates, and an appropriate amount of maltose. It is mostly suitable for those whose condition is chronic, has mild anemia, spontaneous sweating and night sweats, likes to eat sweets, and has a dull tongue. For those who are emaciated, astragalus should not be used in large amounts, otherwise it will cause abdominal distension and loss of appetite.

3 References

(l) When using astragalus, attention should be paid to the patient's body shape: Astragalus constitution - complexion is yellow-white or faintly yellow-red, or yellow and dark, all lacking luster. Swollen appearance, dull eyes. The muscles are soft and the abdominal wall is weak and weak, like a cotton pillow. There is no resistance and pain and swelling when pressed. The author calls it "Astragalus belly". Usually prone to sweating, afraid of wind, prone to allergies, nasal congestion, coughing, or colds when exposed to wind and cold. The stool is not formed, or is dry at first and then becomes loose. It is prone to swelling, especially swelling of the feet, and numbness of the hands and feet. The tongue is light and fat, with moist tongue coating.

(2) Middle-aged and elderly people have more opportunities to apply astragalus: lack of exercise, malnutrition, disease, and aging can all lead to muscle weakness, especially in the abdomen. Abdominal muscle atrophy and fat accumulation may be accompanied by Edema, etc. This kind of person is what the "Synopsis of the Golden Chamber" calls "a respectable person" with "weak bones and strong skin". This body type is particularly common among middle-aged and elderly people. Therefore, Astragalus is often used in middle-aged and elderly people.

(3) Astragalus must be taken frequently and for a long time to be effective: Astragalus is not used in "Typhoid", and the four adverse conditions are rare in "Golden Chamber", so it can be seen that astragalus is used for internal injuries and miscellaneous diseases. According to Mr. Yue Meizhong’s experience, “Astragalus is really effective in treating paralysis, numbness, muscle loss, etc. in neurological diseases. For serious diseases, it must be taken from a few dollars to a few taels, and it must be taken in one day, and it will be effective if it is taken for a long time.” The usual range of Astragalus is 10-30g, and large doses can reach 120g or more. I once saw Mr. Sun, an old Chinese medicine doctor in the dermatology department in my hometown, using up to 500g of astragalus. However, excessive dosage can cause chest tightness, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, and dizziness and hot flashes. Especially those with tight muscles and constipation should use it sparingly or with caution. It should not be used by those with excessive sweating, fever, or red and sore throat.

(4) Zhang Zhongjing has a dosage range for using astragalus: a large amount of astragalus can treat water vapor, yellow sweat, and edema (5 taels), a medium amount can treat wind paralysis and physical weakness (3 taels), and a small amount can treat asthenia. Not enough work (1 taels). Modern applications can be appropriately changed based on Zhang Zhongjing’s medication experience. If used to treat edema, the amount can reach 60-100g; to treat hemiplegia, bone hyperplasia pain, etc., 30-60g can be used; for upper gastrointestinal ulcers, 15-30g can be used.

(5) The pulse condition of Astragalus syndrome is not specific. Fangji Huangqi Decoction is used for floating pulse, while Astragalus, Peony, Guizhi and Bitter Wine Decoction is mainly used for treating weak pulse. Therefore, the key to using Astragalus regardless of floating pulse or sinking pulse is to check the body shape and whether the muscles are soft.
