Lüliang is located between 36°43′~38°43′ north latitude and 110°22′~112°19′ east longitude. It is named after the Luliang Mountains that run through the entire territory. The maximum width from east to west is 140 kilometers, from north to south. The maximum distance is 220 kilometers, and the total length of the surrounding border is 954.3 kilometers. Luliang is located in the west of central Shanxi Province, adjacent to Taiyuan City and Jinzhong City to the east, and across the Yellow River from northern Shaanxi to the west.

It borders Linfen City and Xinzhou City in the south and north respectively. The land area is 21,000 square kilometers, accounting for 13.5% of the province's land area, and the cultivated land area is 7.88 million acres. In May 1971, the Luliang region was established.
