Mazu's name is Molinyang (960-987), a native of Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian.
Mo Niang was smart since she was a child, read from memory, and was proficient in literature and meaning. At the age of thirteen, she accepted the mysterious secret method and became a famous witch in the local area, saving people from danger and salvaging shipwrecks.
Legend has it that Yongxi in Song Taizu ascended to heaven on September 9th. Due to the nostalgia of local villagers for Mo Niang, some people say that she often shows her spirits and is regarded as a god.
