In June of the fifteenth year of Tianbao (756), Tongguan was captured by rebels, and Chang 'an was in danger. Xuanzong decided to take refuge in Sichuan at Yang's suggestion. When they arrived at Ant Post (now Xingping County, Shaanxi Province), the soldiers were tired and hungry, and the weather was hot, so they refused to move on.

At this time, Yang's political enemies, Prince Li and Chen Yizhi, thought that the time was ripe to get rid of Yang. Chen instigated the soldiers and said that the rebellion was all caused by Yang, and killing Yang could stop the rebellion.

At this time, more than 20 Tibetan messengers blocked Yang's horse's head outside the west gate of the station and asked him for food. The enraged soldiers immediately surrounded them and shouted, "Yang Guozhong conspired with Tubo!" An arrow hit his saddle. Yang fled to the west gate, and soldiers swarmed in and hacked him to death.
