The origin of Zhuhai

Zhuhai is located in the southwest of the Pearl River Estuary and is named after it is located where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea. Before the Tang and Song Dynasties, the coastal line of the Northwest River Delta was north of Wugui Mountain (in today's Zhongshan City), and the entire Zhuhai area consisted of remote islands scattered outside the Pearl River Estuary. In 221 BC, it was affiliated to Panyu County of Nanhai County. It was affiliated to Panyu County in the Han Dynasty. It was affiliated to Dongguan County in the Jin to Chen Dynasties. It was affiliated to Bao'an County in the Sui Dynasty. It was affiliated to Dongguan County in the Tang Dynasty. After the Song Dynasty, due to the prosperity of salt and silver mining here, Xiangshan Town began to be established in Shanchang Village. In the 22nd year of Shaoxing (1152), Xiangshan County was established, under the jurisdiction of Guangzhou Prefecture, and continued to the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. It was established as a county in 1953, a city in 1979, and a special economic zone in 1980.

There are many legends about the origin of Zhuhai’s place names, but the explanation that can stand the most scrutiny should be the interpretation from a geographical perspective. The sea area between Tangjia and Lingdingyang in Zhuhai was called "Zhuhai" by local residents in ancient times. In the "Tang Genealogy", someone named "Tang Zhuhai" (Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty). In the "School Song" of Tangjia Sanfeng Primary School in the early years of the Republic of China, the lyrics include the sentence "Zhuhai in front and Goose Peak in back". It can be seen that this sea area has long been known as "Zhuhai". Therefore, when Zhuhai was established as a county, this area was called "Zhuhai" because it was located where the Pearl River flows out to the sea. Most of Zhuhai originally belonged to Zhongshan County. In 1953, part of the coastal areas and islands were demarcated from Zhongshan, Dongguan, and Baoan counties to establish Zhuhai County. The county seat is located in today's Tangjia Town. In 1958, Zhuhai County was merged into Zhongshan County. In 1961, the organizational system of Zhuhai County was restored, and the county seat was relocated in Xiangzhou. In March 1979, with the approval of the State Council, the county was removed from the county and established as a city, becoming a provincial municipality. In 1983, Doumen County was incorporated into Zhuhai City.

The Zhuhai Special Economic Zone was established in August 1980. At that time, the area of ??the special economic zone was only 6.81 square kilometers. After two adjustments, the area of ??the special economic zone was expanded to 121 square kilometers. Currently, Zhuhai City has jurisdiction over Xiangzhou District, Jinwan District, Doumen District (formerly Doumen County), and High-tech Zone.
