What is military meteorological support?

In order to complete the first task, the military meteorological system must establish an independent military atmospheric observation and detection system in addition to actively using the atmospheric observation data of local meteorological departments to meet the needs of wartime meteorological support. The armed forces of developed countries have established modern military atmospheric detection systems, including ground-based detection systems and space-based detection systems. Ground-based detection system includes automatic ground meteorological observation network, high-altitude atmospheric detection network, weather radar network and so on. Space-based detection systems include meteorological aircraft detection, rocket sounding and meteorological satellites. The ability to detect the atmosphere has been greatly improved compared with the past, especially the appearance of meteorological satellites, which enables human beings to overlook the changes of the atmosphere from space. General military atmospheric detection system works around the clock, transmitting real-time meteorological information in time through advanced communication network, ensuring that military command institutions can keep abreast of weather conditions at any time.

In order to complete the second task, the military meteorological departments of all countries regard weather forecasting as their central business. Constantly explore new forecasting methods, reform forecasting methods and improve forecasting accuracy. In the current forecasting business of our army, an integrated comprehensive forecast is basically formed, which is mainly based on weather chart forecasting method, supplemented by mathematical statistics forecasting method, dynamic statistics forecasting method and single station forecasting method, and the forecasting accuracy rate reaches 70%-80%. The military meteorological systems of some developed countries have now established numerical weather forecasting services, making weather forecasting objective and quantitative step by step. Our army is also organizing research on military numerical weather forecast. In the near future, our military's weather forecast business will undergo qualitative changes and the forecast accuracy will be improved.

In order to complete the third task, military meteorologists are required not only to have the ability to accurately predict the weather, but also to have a certain level of military strategy. Military meteorologists are the commander's external brain, the commander's staff and assistant, and play a vital role in handling and making decisions on the relationship between military operations and weather. Military meteorologists must actively put forward suggestions, seek advantages and avoid disadvantages, and help commanders make up their minds to make correct use of the weather.
