How does radar record the weather?

The radar can emit short-wave radio waves from the antenna, which can be reflected and displayed on the radar screen when encountering weather phenomena such as typhoon, thunderstorm and rainstorm in the distant atmosphere. So we can see the overall appearance and internal structure of typhoon, thunderstorm and rainstorm on the screen. If there has been a thunderstorm in a place, you can see irregular bright spots or stripes on the screen of a radar instrument set up in a place hundreds of kilometers away. This is an image of a thunderstorm. There are some lines on the screen indicating how far the thunderstorm is from the radar. If the rain area or rainfall is heavy, the area of bright spots or bright stripes on the screen is also large and bright. As long as you observe it several times at regular intervals, you can calculate the moving direction and speed of thunderstorms. In this way, we can clearly know what kind of thunderstorm is coming in a few hours or dozens of minutes. The intensity of heavy rain and ordinary rain is very different, and the bright spots on the screen can be distinguished.

In addition, the horizontal structure and vertical structure of thunderstorm clouds can also be displayed on the radar screen.

The cloud and rain around the center of the typhoon can also be displayed on the radar screen. The speed and direction of moving wind can only be calculated by several regular observations. With these valuable data, we can accurately know the location, intensity, moving direction and moving speed of the typhoon, so as to make a more accurate typhoon forecast.
