Go to Zhangzhou Station and take the "Zhang-Xiamen Special Line" bus. Even though it is shabby, it is quite fast.

Get off at the Commodity Inspection Station, take a bus (which bus to use, see the stop sign. It costs one yuan to get on the bus) and get off at Zhongshan Road Station (Zhongshan Road is the most prosperous pedestrian street in Xiamen. Especially at night)

Go straight down to the pier, which is also the "ferry". You can take a boat there (there were free boats in the past) to Gulangyu Island. It seems to be free to take the boat back after 9 pm.
