What are the two kinds of storm surges?

Storm surge can be divided into typhoon storm surge and temperate storm surge.

Typhoon storm surge is caused by typhoon, which mostly occurs in summer and autumn. Its characteristics are: fierce, fast, strong and destructive. All countries affected by typhoons have typhoon storm surges in their coastal areas;

Temperate storm surges are caused by temperate cyclones, which mostly occur in spring and autumn and occasionally in summer. Its characteristics are: the process of increasing water is relatively stable, and the height of increasing water is lower than that of typhoon storm surge. This kind of storm surge is mainly common in mid-latitude coastal areas, including the North Sea coast of Europe, the east coast of the United States and the North Sea coast of China.

Both kinds of storm surges occur in China, and China is one of the few countries in the world where both kinds of storm surges are very serious. Storm surge, a meteorological disaster, can occur all year round in China, and coastal areas from south to north are not immune.

★ Storm surge

Storm surge is a catastrophic natural phenomenon. Due to severe atmospheric disturbances, such as strong winds and sudden changes in air pressure (usually referring to disastrous weather systems such as typhoons and extratropical cyclones), when the sea water rises and falls abnormally and overlaps with astronomical tides (usually referring to tides), if this superposition happens to be the superposition of strong low-pressure storm surges and high swells formed by astronomical climaxes, it will form stronger destructive power. It can also be called "storm increasing water", "storm tsunami", "meteorological tsunami" or "tidal wave".
