Water System and Topographic Features of Pearl River Delta

The Pearl River Delta is the largest plain area in Guangdong Province. The landscape of the Pearl River Delta is formed by the sediment carried by the Pearl River, which is formed by the convergence of three rivers: the west, the north and the east. After thousands of years of deposition, an alluvial plain with a thickness of 40-60 meters was formed in the middle and lower reaches. Large-scale settlements have appeared in Xinhui, Shunde, Panyu, Dongguan, Xiqiao Mountain in the South China Sea and Guidao in the south of Guangzhou.

With the change of natural environment, the ancient Pearl River Delta, which consists of Xijiang River and Beijiang River, is gradually connected with the Dongjiang Delta, which later became land, thus forming the modern Pearl River Delta. Because the Pearl River Delta is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, with mild climate, abundant rainfall and long sunshine time, it has unique potential to develop agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, scholars of geology, geography, hydrology and water conservancy engineering at home and abroad have been divided on whether there is a delta in the Pearl River Estuary. Later, the theory of negation was once popular, and its advocates were many heavyweight Chinese and foreign scholars.

For example, Swedish water conservancy expert Ke only recognized the small-scale delta with sediment accumulation from Guangzhou to Macau, which was called "Guangzhou Delta", while Swiss professors Drofez and Hamm, who were teaching at Sun Yat-sen University at that time, simply declared that there was no Pearl River Delta, and Chen Ye, who later became a famous geologist, was a supporter of the "negative theory" at that time.
