Strong convective weather refers to sudden, violent and destructive disastrous weather, often accompanied by thunder, heavy rain and soul-stirring. Thunderstorm, squall line, hail, tornado, thunderstorm and strong wind, and short-term heavy precipitation are the main members of the strong convection family.

All severe convective weather is inseparable from the severe convective system. In the afternoon, the temperature is high, the sun is scorching the earth, and the atmosphere near the ground is heated and expanded, forming a rising warm and humid airflow. As the temperature drops, the water vapor contained in the air will condense into water droplets, which will be picked up by a stronger updraft when falling. Repeatedly, small water droplets will be integrated into large water droplets until the upper airflow can't support their weight, and finally heavy rainfall will be formed.

China is a vast country, with a year 12 months, 24 hours a day. Strong convective weather may occur all over the country, and the types of strong convective weather are different in each season and place. Generally speaking, the strong convective weather in South China began to increase in March and April, and then with the northward shift of subtropical high and the frequent occurrence of northeast cold vortex, the strong convective weather in May gradually entered a period of high incidence.

How to defend against strong convective weather?

Usually, on the radar echo map, the area surrounded by green echo generally corresponds to the expected rainfall. Generally speaking, it may rain in light green, and it will definitely rain in dark green.

When the radar echo changes from blue to purple, it shows that the precipitation intensity is gradually increasing, and red or even purple echoes appear, indicating that there may be strong convective weather such as short-term thunderstorms, strong winds and hail. The moving direction and speed of rain area can be seen from the multi-time dynamic map of radar echo, so as to judge whether our city will be affected by strong convective weather.
